Getting started with acquiring profitable websites - join the journey

Can you buy your way to success on the Internet? Few people realize there is big money in buying established websites... but where to start? After poking around on the premier forum for buying and selling websites for a couple of months, I've decided to take the plunge. Follow my progress as I learn what it takes to find and buy an established, profit-making site at the right price. I'll look for a site or sites that can be easily tweaked to make even more money. Use this opportunity to do a bit of finding and analyzing websites yourself. Ask questions, comment away, learn along with me and find the money!

  1. Coming soon... the sale?

Another week sails by. Monday, I get an email from the seller. We're good to go. And not a word since. I don't think all sales move this slowly but the seller is in a situation where his time is limited so it's not like he's trying to pull something. If I didn't know the seller any better than I do (I don't know him real well, but we've had some interaction over the past few years so we aren't total strangers either.) I might be worried. As it is I'm just a bit antsy.

    Meanwhile, I've ...

When it comes to understanding sellers - it helps to know where they are coming from. In addition to uncovering the history of the site, it helps to know some history about the seller to. Usually, you can uncover both at once.

    Professional or Casual Seller?

Before we get too far into these differences, when I mean a "professional" seller I mean someone who sells a LOT of businesses. If you are working with a broker, then s/he might be a professional but the actual ...

  3. Another Down Week

by , September 2nd, 2010 at 02:04 PM (Getting started with acquiring profitable websites - join the journey)
This week I was hoping to report the results on an offer I made on a website. I have not heard from the seller. Meanwhile, I've been working on a couple of different projects unrelated to this one and they've been consuming all of my time.

The site I am looking at will take a lot of work to get it where I want it to be but I think I can make it profitable again.

I'll back next week. I hope with some good news about the offer and with some ideas you might find useful. ...

by , August 25th, 2010 at 06:52 AM (Getting started with acquiring profitable websites - join the journey)
This question was asked by Clinton in his comment on the last post about Pawn Stars. Between his further comments and events of the past week, it became apparent what a great post this would make.

Clinton asked "How do we help them rationalize the lower price?"

Later he pointed out "Sellers aren't the best judges of what they're selling"

This point stared me in the face as I was talking to a site owner about a potential purchase.

by , August 18th, 2010 at 09:55 AM (Getting started with acquiring profitable websites - join the journey)
Get your mind out of the gutter that is PAWN Stars. For those of you in the nether parts of the planet, Pawn Stars is a cable program about a Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. I love that show. Why?

To me it's basic as I am riveted to anything that defines value.

In this show people bring their stuff to the pawn shop to see what they can get out of it. So what does that teach me about buying a business?

The owners - The "Old Man", Rick, and Corey are in this ...
