• drop ship site sold for 100K, built from scratch

I was looking for a "general lounge" forum but couldn't find one... so I'll post my find here instead.
Today, while browsing my usual news sites I came across this article and video from mixergy
This is an interview with a guy who built a dropship business selling custom car plates, claims 80k/year profit and sold it for "around 100k" on Twitter 4 years after startup. Interesting stuff and worthy of discussion.

Some interesting insights in this Vid. Has anyone had success with dropshipping?

Luke, dropshipping is a big deal as you probably know. There are huge multi-million dollar businesses built around it. Even Amazon affiliates work on what is really a dropship model.

The secret to big money with drop shipping is to find a merchant and do a private deal. You then build the site, build the traffic and funnel sales to your merchant. He takes care of all the invoicing, payment, support and, of course, the delivery.

It's not easy to find such merchants and do the deals so you keep your details confidential - you don't go encouraging other affiliates to approach your merchant.

The smarter affiliates actually capture the customer details before parsing the lead to the merchant. That way they get to also build their list.

      Exciting stuff.

Regarding difficulty in "finding such merchants"
Drop shippers who have good relationships with the manufacturers are often referred to etailers. If you're interested in carrying particular brands its a good idea to call up the manufacturer and find out who they recommend. (I'm not sure how to reference the exact quote).

I have found in Australia it's easier to not mention drop shipping to wholesalers and just ask if they will deliver to addresses other than mine and not to deliver invoices. But I suppose I am lucky as most businesses in Australia still really haven't worked out the money to be made online or use crap web design companies and deliver really useless sites. Here I normally beat the wholesaler in the search engines for their own products so it makes it easy.
