When buying a domain, here are a couple of ways to check the backlink integrity. You can check and see where the site is hosted. A good tool for this is Nmap. It will give you an idea of the network the domain is working on. The goal is to determine where the site has been hosted or is currently being hosted. Most SEO people put their sites on SEO hosting companies like gotwebhost.com and seohosting.com. These sites give you the multiple servers to create the artificial links. Typically, they offer you multiple class c addresses. Then, you can check the backlinks to see how closely the class c addresses are It is more difficult to host on multiple class a servers and that will give you a good idea about the links. Using Nmap you can actually discover how many of the top SEO links are put together. For example, when they pay to get another A class they will often put multiple sites there to make it more cost effective. Some web hosting companies offer multiple class a and others only offer multiple class c.
You can also check to see what registrar holds the domain. Some registrars are known for being scammers. If you discover many of the backlinks and the original domain were purchased from scammy registrars or are held are held at scammy registrars, then it gives you another red flag.
One way, to test for a scammy registrar, is to call a friend and have the check to see if a domain is available from a reputable registrar. If the domain shows as available and is typed into the search engines a lot then it is a good choice. Then, go to said scammy registrar and try to register it. The scammy registrar will say it is unavailalbe.
Some of the largest black hat SEO people own registrars for the purpose of gaining domains in an automated way. Imagine having keywords sent over DNS servers all day long that measure the traffic against a database and then automatically purchase the domain. You can get millions of domains that are all valuable real estate.
