Assorted Thoughts on Website Buying, Selling and Monetizing

Giving prospective buyers access to your Google Analytics stats

Rate this Entry
Had someone tell me the other day that he gave a prospective buyer his GA login details.

Saw a post in Sitepoint today that asks, "Is there any other way to provide access to Analytics than to give the username/password to the account?"

It's pretty basic stuff, but I thought I'd do a quick post to point out that you can give someone "guest" access to stats for a particular website instead of giving them your main GA login (where they get access to stats for ALL your sites).

Log into Google Analytics, click on the site you want stats for and then click on User Manager >> Add User.

You can then provide an email address for Google to add. You need to specify the level of access you'd like to give them. You can choose either "Account Administrator" or ""View Reports Only". Obviously, the latter is safer.

More details at Google's guide to guest access.

Caution: Don't forget to delete that user if the sale of the website doesn't go through.

That could be very handy. I wouldn't want a potential buyer of a little site to get access to all our info. And I don't think that screenshots are much use either - too easy to fake. This "guest user" idea seems like a good compromise. Thanks.

Too bad they donīt have something similar to Google Adsense. That would be great.
