Thanks Hooperman, had a look at Wordpress, but looks a bit complicated for me at the moment. I am really new to all this so am going to go the easier route and try the webbuilder with 1&1 - I know its dear but I am using it as a learning tool for me as well, so hopefully money well spent. will let you know how I get on !!

Hi Hooperman, thanks for the info, I had a look at Wordpress but didnt feel ready for that yet.

Have gone with the web builder at 1&1. I know its the dearer option but figure its better for me while I start learning.

Hopefully it will be money well spent. I also went on to Flippa and saw some of the websites on there. Big differences as you know ! some looked fantastic !! - There was an electronics site for sale that was brilliant. It phased me a bit to be honest that I could never get anywhere near that. But then I saw some sites that were really poor and they wanted tons of money for them! - Will let you know how I progress, thanks Richie

Don't be influenced too much by how pretty/awful those sites look. It's the bottom line (£££) that counts and often ugly sites do well. I've got sites that look like they were made in the last century that do quite well.

I've got sites that were made in the last century - last millennium even - and haven't changed an iota since.

Hi Guys, Been doing a bit of research, well surfing really, and came up a site called www.HotUKDeals.com Really good site and is already doing what I thought to do with "onemonthtrial" in a lot of ways to be honest.

I know it is really really hard to come up with something new on the internet, but this is so close to what my initial idea is, I feel I could be doing a lot of work and to be a pale imitation of them. I think lessons learnt is - research your idea thoroughly, I didn`t thats for sure. Am thinking now maybe to park the domain? and try to come up with something more innovative. I am not kidding myself that I can come up with another "Facebook" but I do feel as a beginner it will be hard to play with the big boys, as always would appreciate your thoughts.

My question is, do you guys try to come up with something new? or do you do something already there and just try to be the best at that?

I've got one area that is my main focus and I'm also an opportunistic expired domain buyer. I usually buy a domain that's expired, build up a site on it and then wonder why on earth I chose that domain

You don't always need to be the best in your area. Sometimes it's enough to just be different and offer something that can't be found elsewhere.

One easy option you've got is to create a content site in an area that interests you (and that can be monetised) and write loads of in depth stuff about it. Try and get traffic up and then see what your options are when it's at a good level.

    Hello all,

Been looking at sites that have expired, found some cracking sites, mydog.com, thenyou.com, the poem.com all sites that i think are very saleable. When it comes to buying them........... they are gone already? - is it me? am I cynical? have the providers got software in place that sees a good name and then immediatley takes it out of the public domain? was on "stuckdomains" where they are available then go onto "godaddy" and its game over. what do you think? Richie

Oh, NO! For the love of all things righteous, don't use 1&1! I've been with some bad hosts in my decade of building websites (Site5, for example, they suck balls!), but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is nearly as bad as 1&1. Seriously, if you've already signed up there, just stop what you're doing, cancel, and regroup and start with another host. ANY host.
