Talking Got any SEO tips for someone with no $$???

Hi, it's me again. I am now taking the next step by asking anyone out there who has experience getting traffic to their site, without paying for a SEO company. I have submitted my site manually to all of the top engines, including DMOZ.org. If anyone has any tips about the best way to get have a site listed on the first page of SE results, I would love to hear your how you did it. Thank you for any help or tips you may have to offer!

There are two basic resources available to you when you are trying to do SEO work for your site, your time and your money. If you've got no money, then be prepared to invest your time into it. I'd recommend start by adding a blog to your site where you will regularly add very interesting articles. Once you have build up some decent amount of content on it, then proceed to do some link building. Of course content creating and link building are very involved topics of their own, but if I were in your position that's where I'd start.

My #1 advice would be to focus on the big picture. The big picture is getting traffic to your site, not appeasing search engines. Doing some SEO and getting some quick traffic is easy, but shortlived. Work on creating good reasons for everybody (not just SEs) to send you traffic. Despite the big deal everybody makes of Google, Google is small fry when it come to traffic. They are the single biggest driver, yes, but overall Google accounts for less than 5% of the way web users find their destinations.

Join communities in the niche, sign up to better blog fields on the subject and post regularly in them, write good material and place them as guest posts on other sites....etc.

I agree with both the previous posts. There is no substitute for creating a compelling reason for people to visit your site. Some kick ass articles, great functionality, a strong community etc., will get people linking to you naturally.

And that will help your performance in search engines as well.

With no money, I think word of mouth is where I would start...tell everyone you know about your site. In person, email, facebook, however you communicate with your friends and family. Some might share it with their friends and families, some might link to it.

After that, I would hang out in any forums or places where people talk about the subject your site is about. See what kind of questions people are asking. You should be able to see some opportunities where you or your site can help. If you see the same kind of questions being asked over and over and you do not have that topic covered, it may inspire you to create it on your site.

Be active in your niche, be the authority, break news, help people. Watch your server logs and see how people are finding you now.

I've found with my sites that it's the mix of links that work as much as the quantity or quality. So, for example, if all you do is article marketing to the same sites your links become less effective as they are coming from the same places as all of your other links. Aim to add new kinds of links each time you promote your site, that way you get a powerful link profile. I generally create link in article directories, PR networks and a variety of web 2.0 properties. Submit whatever RSS feeds you have to as many RSS directories as you can and bookmark everything. From there assess where you are.
