Want to make money online? Start here. For Goodness Sake!

Want to make money online? For goodness sake, stop and read these first.

    The Guru Facade
Raygoza is an Internet Marketer a 21st century snake oil salesman
Generate Leads > Build a "Sucker List" > Sell Product
Frank Kern, Mike Filsaime, Yanik Silver - a whole category devoted to the syndicate at ol' Salty's blog

The dark side of internet marketing is what the opportunity seeker is more likely to come across first. I've been screaming warnings since long before any of those articles above and before the saltydroid's domain was even registered. It's heartening that momentum against these marketers is gathering and the media is sitting up and taking notice. There was even a long article in this weekend's Sunday Telegraph - the UK's largest broadsheet newspaper (but the article's not yet on their site). Any more links you'd like to suggest?

    Interesting and useful links.
Here is something in a related area - if somebody is vulnerable to get-rich scams, I believe they are probably also vulnerable to self help, which of course includes getting rich but also getting love, status and general fulfilment. Also, a lot of the motivational techniques used by the self-help gurus, are very similar to some of those used in the get-rich-online world.
So I'd recommend reading these two books -
SHAM - How the Self Help Movement made America Helpless by Steve Salerno
( just as relevant in the UK and probably other countries too though)

Psychobabble ( Stephen Briers) - British guy, nicely explores the fallacies in pop psychology a lot of which feed into self help and get rich schemes.

    Since you're recommending relevant books...

A few of us EP members got together to write a book warning people about get-rich-quick scams.

Thanks, Kay. I knew someone would mention that

The Daily Telegraph article is now online.

'You can make six figures' - we test internet marketing claims
Various 'gurus' claim to make you a fortune if you splash out on their workshops, DVD sets and courses. David Robinson investigates
The term "internet marketing" can be confusing. On the one hand it refers to the legitimate promotion of products and services on the web as done by thousands of companies every day. However, it also refers to a sprawling unregulated industry that offers to help ordinary people start online enterprises and make money.
Unregulated industry ripping people off? Wait till they discover Flippa!

"People are often lured by a free product like an ebook or a webinar, but this is only the beginning of the funnel, the aim is always to get you to buy two-day seminars or year-long mentoring programmes that can end up costing people tens of thousands of pounds."
It's common for internet marketing operations to share customers' details with other businesses in the selfhelp industry - via affiliate networks - to try to squeeze more money out of people, Mr Jones claimed.
The comments in this blog post are interesting too. Here's one:

That's capitalism - today it's the vunerable, unemployed, under educated or irrationally aspirational who make the walk to the "rockface of hard knocks".
There's no link in the comments to this forum. Does anyone with an established Disqus account want to do the needful? Nothing wrong with a bit of marketing

And this is "news"? No wonder the newspaper industry is in difficulty. Compared with stuff like this and even some BBC TV programmes, EP is at the bleeding edge.

(Mind you, a lot of that is because they try to cut costs by not hiring professional writers for a lot of their content.)

I therefore wondered if we should go into competition with the national press. I've found the perfect domain if anyone's interested. Instead of DailyNews we could have Daily Ancients. DailyAncients.com is currently FTR on NameCheap for $10.69 p/a.

It would be great if someone would post a comment and give them the heads up about us. You could earn a big brownie point for that plus a photo of all the current mods in the nude (optional).

I'm most amused by Michael Green^H^H^H^H^H^H^HGrant Shapps being the picture they used for that article in the Telegraph
