I accidentally saboutaged a site in the SERPs a few years ago. Nothing to do with spam links, either.

If incoming spam links could drop a site then people would be doing it like mad to their competitors.

For $49 a month I can get 60 000 spam profile links a month generated and have them all pinged repeatedly to get them indexed. Not all of them will stick, but still.
