Selling your first Website: My Experience

Today, I secured the sale of my first website, which you may remember from an evaluation thread that I posted a few weeks back. I never actually intended to sell it within a year of starting up, however I really had run out of ways to break into the poker domain- which in truth is, IMO, far too competitive for a first time webmaster. Since I began that website, I have since focused my efforts more onto small niche websites, with highly targeted keywords to profit from adsense. Its early days yet, but the results so far have been encouraging.
Back to the original point, I decided that my site would be better in the hands of someone with more experience than me at link building campaigns to squeeze some income from it. I listed the site on flippa, and despite my misgivings, found a buyer. The profit I made was about 40%. Not a massive figure, but all things considered, it represented a good return on my initial investment in terms of capital and time.

Apologies for the slightly rambling story, I'm really just using this as an excuse to get to know everyone a bit better- How did your frst experience of selling a website go?

I bought a site with good content (I'm a sucker for well written content) and thought that I could improve its Adsense earnings. Turns out that after a few months I couldn't, so I thought I'd get rid. The site was in a niche subject and fortunately, someone who was in that niche saw my site and snapped it up. I didn't do much with the site while I had it, other than spruce up teh look and feel and change the Adsense layout and I got 50% more than I paid for it. That just about covered my labour I think!

Were you happy with how your sale went mgallone? Do you think you could have got more if you'd done something different?

    Thanks for sharing Hooperman

I am fairly happy with the how the sale went, got more than my costs etc. However, I do think I could have got more out of it simply by setting a higher BIN price- I think the buyer I ended up with would probably have been happy to have paid an extra $100. Regardless, I see it as a learning experience, and I'm happy to have it under my belt
