My most interesting lead so far this year

Guy writes to me about wanting to sell his site.

I do a bit of checking up on it. It was registered on the 1st of September this year.

    It has zero incoming links.

I went back to his email to see the price again.

    He wants £60,000.

    He expects he'll get £60,000.

Lesson: I must learn to be more optimistic

    Clinton,

    Don't buy it!

I've got a domain only one day newer than that - I'd let go for half that amount. I'll even let you have full rights to the product for a few thousand £s more.

What were his reasons for that price? On what basis did he come up with 60k specifically? Other than possibly forgetting to take his meds that day i mean....

It's actually rather common, some people seem to think making money online is THAT easy
I see that frequently with domains - people trying to sell domains they just registered for a ridiculously high amount on the forums.

Some yes, but I don't know if all of them think in terms of making money online. The ones I get may have never considered making money online themselves and simply got carried away with their own perceptiveness, the brilliance of their idea and the genius involved in uploading a page or two to the interweb. And they want others to share in the good fortune by buying this idea/concept off them. Dreemer, it's not everybody who can come up with a business idea, it takes a kind of superior life form for that. However, any idiot who boasts no more than half a damaged brain cell can execute the idea and build it into a successful, multi-million dollar business. The superior life form is also aware that websites are like jewellery - the newer and shinier they are, the more millions people will pay.

Today I had an email from which I produce an extract (paraphrased because the forum rules don't allow exact email quotes)

sale xxxxxx.co.uk - it has only just been created tonight 15/09/10

How much will this sell for and can you sell it for me?
