New Moderators and volunteering for future mod positions

First, a big welcome to tke71709 and ScottJ, our two new moderators. The forum is getting busier and so for the first time since we started earlier this year, we're adding some moderation talent. I'm sure members will agree that Joel and Scott are excellent choices. Please extend them your cooperation.

Moderators on this forum do two main tasks:

1. They encourage discussion:
This ranges from welcoming new members to starting threads to splitting threads when they think it will assist conversations

2. They enforce the forum rules:
This includes everything from removing spam to banning members.

They do this for no personal gain and I, for one, am very grateful to them.

Would you like to volunteer to be a mod? If you visit these forums regularly and have built up a posting history of cordial conversations and helping others, you may be a good fit as a mod. You would need to have a bit of free time to do the moderation work. It's not a permanent position, you can resign if your circumstances change.

If interested please drop me a PM. I'll keep your name on file and consult with existing mods the next time we're looking to make an appointment.

As with earlier announcements, I'll extend my condolences. This can be a thankless and demanding job and that is just moderating MY posts! :-)

Anyway, I called up this thread because it's time to talk about moderation again.

hooperman and ScottJ have been kind of busy with other stuff of late and haven't been able to participate as much as they would have liked. They are still mods for the moment, but I'm looking for volunteers to take on mod responsibilities.

The main responsibilities of a mod on these boards are as stated in the OP - mods encourage discussion and implement the forum rules. They encourage discussion by posting, asking questions, starting threads, welcoming new members and ensuring threads don't end up with zero replies (there's nothing worse for a new member to find that there's be 100 views of his post but no replies). Mods also have access to the moderator forum, they can issue infractions and bans, approve posts held up for moderation, edit and move posts and threads, delete the occasional spam etc.

Key attributes in a mod aren't so much to do with knowledge or experience but, in order of importance, are as follows:
1. The mods are friendly and helpful
2. They regularly take part in conversations (and they are seen to be about)
3. They are good at welcoming new members and making them feel at home
4. They visit this site quite regularly (and so can approve new posts when I'm not around ...and otherwise implement forum rules)

My sincere thanks to all existing and previous mods who've done a fantastic job so far.

I'm also looking to see what extra privileges we can give our hard working mods. One suggestion is the option of a second link in their signature. What else can we give them without changing the nature of these forums?
