Just received my new toy - a nice laptop :)

My Toshiba laptop arrived this morning (after a lot of problems)

    Nice

Lots of toys with it, lots to play around with.

But first, need to get rid of all their crap. Took off Windows 7 and used the Windows XP restore CD they sent, but .... the junk they've installed. Wow! And the number of programs in the background calling home, double Wow!

I'm stripping it back and deleting all the junk such as Adobe Reader (yucks! can't wait to get Foxit on), and IE 6.0 (being replaced with Opera) ...tons more. See you all later.

    Give us the specs then!

Is Windows 7 that bad? I must admit I do like XP, but my current laptop came with 7 and given the fact I just do basic things with it, 7 is adequate for me.

Windows 7 is quite good, better than Vista, but I need to sync various stuff on this laptop with an XP machine and don't fancy working across operating systems.

Specs: good processor and graphics card and stuff and 4 GB of RAM (this was the problem part as there's a shortage of RAM at the moment). Now regretting using their Restore CD to install XP Pro. Should have just used one of the many XP licences I've got and installed from scratch. It would have taken less time.

My biggest bug with windows 7 is it doesn't really like usb external hdd's and can crash the taskbar if you are transferring large amounts of files. Apart from that I have found it to be faster than xp overall.

I really like Win7, but in saying that I did suffer Vista for too long so maybe they conditioned me to loving it. On the odd occasion a family/friend gets a new comp and asks for help like you Clinton it's jaw dropping watching the system tray just fill with icons they just keep on coming

Nothing like getting a new toy though, is it just for around the house for browsing on?

You won't believe what it's for!

The idea is so I don't need to go down to the log cabin office in the garden if I need to do some work.

We've already got three laptops in the house and I can use one of those, but they have audible hard disks and fans. I can't bear the slightest noise when I'm working (my office PC is completely fanless)

I like the ipad for the living room, not really good for working but when I'm not in the home office I usually only need something to check a site/domain or income so more than up to that and it's quick & quiet. Like the idea of fanless pc, my wife's one in the office really whirls and you only really notice it when it goes to sleep or powers down.

Yeah, we - Best Price Computers / Poweroid - were the first to introduce zero noise PCs into the UK (along with many other firsts). The only snag was damping the hard disk. Flash disks weren't big enough for the OS back then but they would have been ideal.

I was going to upgrade my hard drive to SSD recently as I had suspicions it was have senior moments but decided for now to buy a drive clone thingy ma bob from Amazon and a couple of back-up drives and took a mirror image, nice quick & cheap complete backup of all files & programs and put the new drive in with no problems, I do fancy holding off and looking to get a custom built quiet SSD rig next year.
