    Sorry for the downtime folk

As some of you know, this site was the victim of a DDoS attack starting last Saturday.

Unfortunately, that was a bad time for me as I was leaving England with the family for Asia on Sunday. We were headed for a long, six-week vacation. From Asia we then went to Sydney. In between I had patchy internet access and couldn't do much to fix things.

Anyway, for those who don't know what a DDoS attack is, the Wikipedia page has a good explanation. Essentially, it's not compromised security. At the root is some idiot who has written a script to infect poorly protected PCs all over the world. He can then take control of those PCs at random and ask them to do things like requesting web pages. That's not a problem in itself, but a few tens of thousands of PCs requesting pages from a site all at the same time will cause even the most robust of servers to collapse and the site would become inaccessible to everyone. They can keep up such an attack for weeks at a time or even longer. It's not completely no cost to the criminals though. For one, the longer they keep up the attack the more likely they are to have it traced back to them however carefully they cover their tracks.

Like the idiot who launched a similar DDoS attack against the Wikileaks site last week. He took the site down, Wikileaks moved to a cloud hosting service at Amazon to distribute the load... and then moved back to Europe. He's now been caught.

For the more technical among you, ours was a syn flood (and, yes, the kernal did have the right syn cookie settings and other basic DDoS protection, but obviously that wasn't enough on its own). I've now put "other stuff" in place. The guy who did this made some boasts about the size of the attack he was capable of launching. Normally it's not advisable to rile these characters. All the advice in every book points to just playing along and not saying anything to upset them. But I'm going to venture that his boasts of being able to command a 10 Gbps attack was all talk to compensate for his small penis. I'm making a call here that he isn't capable of a tenth of that. We peaked at 100 Mbps and about 150K packets per second. We are now setup to take a lot more than that.

DDoS attacks donít just happen randomly. Usually someone is trying to extract money out of you. That wasn't the case here. I never did get a ransom note. The other cause is when someone is paid to take your site down. It could be a competitor or simply someone who is pissed off with the site.

I don't know if we have any competitors as such. This leaves the pissed off. Have we pissed anyone off? LOL, where do we start?

In any case, the fact that our site is considered important enough for a DDoS attack is in itself a statement that we've arrived! That they devoted a large botnet to attack us has an opportunity cost to them, they could have made a lot more money using those resources elsewhere. That they have chosen us is a bit of an honour. OK, it was inconvenient for a while as it came at a bad time when I was out of town, but hey, the attack is going on right now - possibly to the maximum strength this buffoon can muster - and I'm typing away quite happily. If he does turn out to have a 10 Gbps capacity - several multiples of what was used on the Wikileaks site - I'd be very impressed...with how important I've become!

Wahey we're back! Thanks Clinton, great work. I think somebody was pissed off, a couple of people have been 'exposed' on the forum. Maybe they went down the illegal route. Who knows? Anyway it's good for the forum to be back, I missed it greatly, and I hope the attacker realises that a DDoS attack will not increase the size of his small penis and that he needs to take a trip to the plastic surgeon for that.

If anyone needs the size of their penis altered, I have a great collection of kitchen knives, and will happily volunteer for the task.

FWIW, I'll reply about this issue in the same thread we're having in the private section. For one, it saves me duplicating replies.

Unfortunately for my ego it doesn't look like this site is important enough for a 10 gbps attack

Either that or our friend with the small penis can't muster the 10 Gbps he boasted about. He can't even sustain a 1 Gbps for any decent length of time.

As mentioned in the other thread, I'm on vacation and travelling about. If there's a problem and the site goes down for a bit, I'll fix it as soon as I get back to a good internet connection.

I think the hacker would prefer the "big todger pills" - have you seen Moreniche's selection? Perhaps if we tell him where to look ...

Yes, actually. I'd never even heard of MoreNiche until recently but then someone wanted me to become an affiliate and sell something more mainstream so I signed up and then discovered the sort of things that they specialise in. LOL! Not for me, I'm afraid.
