Are other people as pedantic as I am

I am just curious, when ever I join a website/service/newsletter/affil program I normally use the name of the program as my email address say johnchow(at)domain.com I then use a catchall for that domain and with thunderbird I separate the incoming emails into different folders. One it allows me to ignore most of the crap that gets sent my way, but it also allows me to work out who is onselling db's sometimes you get to see other stuff they are upto like invites from the newest social media etc.. Does anyone else do this or am I just way to pedantic?

I do the exact same thing. The interesting thing is that I almost never get spammed when I do that, but if I use a normal email address, it's almost inevitable that it will get sold and spammed at some point.

I also have a domain setup the same way. Surprisingly, I can't remember having any problem with those addresses getting any spam to indicate that they had been sold or passed on to other offers. So it looks like you are not alone

I do that with some places where I place orders, especially the professional looking sites of big companies where they give you the chance to tick (or untick) a box to opt out of their marketing newsletters.

90% of them are b*stards who end up still sending me a marketing email "by mistake" with small print at the bottom leading to an unsubscribe page (which sometimes shows me subscribed to multiple newsletters). Funny how they all make the same mistake and include me in their list/s when I specifically opted out.

I believe in double opt-in. If you're one of those companies using opt-out it's bad enough and I'm losing trust in you (especially if you're relying on people not reading your text properly). Using a "double opt-out" is simply disgusting and it demonstrates you're not to be trusted. I will never buy from you again.

I haven't experienced these companies selling their list though.
