Who has experience buying or selling high value domains? I am currently speaking to a client who has a very popular .com domain and I guess I am looking for some guidance as to what this domain is worth. For confidentiality purposes I cannot mention the exact domain, but I can tell you that it is an 8 letter english word that would be very valuable for anyone in the markers, crayons & painting industries. He got offered $400K in the past.

WSYSBroker, I often get told by people looking to sell their sites that they got offered $x in the past. They try to set a threshold for negotiation. What they'd like you to think is that their domain/site it worth at least $x; that if you want to ensure you secure the sale you should be bidding above that.He got offered $400K in the past.
What I hear them saying is, "I'm a clueless kid trying it on. I think that because I tell you I've got an offer for $x you will automatically bid above that."
If the seller has an offer, he should keep quiet about it. Showing your hand is not smart. What if you said $400K but the price the buyer/broker had in mind was $650K? You've just done yourself out of a quarter of a million dollars.
I always call their bluff and tell them politely that $x is a very good offer, they should sell immediately before the buyer changes his mind. I wish them all the best of luck with it and congratulate them on a achieving a fantastic deal.
You know something? In every case - every single damn case - the seller comes back to me to say something went wrong with that deal and would I be interested in talking again. He's just blown his $x figure completely out of the water and disclosed to me that he can't sell at that price and that I should be bidding below it - exactly the opposite of what he started out to say!

Are you looking for someone to buy the site, or are you looking for a referral to someone who might be interested? It it's the latter, how much of your fee are you willing to offer?
Are you talking about a domain or a site? If it's a site, does it have any revenue or traffic?
There's no way you can expect to get an accurate estimate based on the minimal information provided.
Nine times out of ten when someone tells me they got offered $xx for their site/domain in the past, I tell them they should re-connect with that person and sell it to them. Have yet to have anyone follow that advice though. Of course there is no way to offer you any decent advice on how to value a domain without knowing what the domain is, there is just such a wide variance in values.
C'mon Michael, you must know a high value domain can't be estimated without the domain name! I have a bit of experience with domains and can maybe help with a domain sale contract, but we'd need to know the domain before putting a price on it. business.com is not worth the same as cabbage.com.
