There's an option for the user to close it if they don't want to see it and what I like about it is that it's consistent on every page, easy to see, easy to use rather than being integrated into content. I've seen other types that are a 'side of the browser' tab that basically do the same thing. I think they're neat.

Anyway, you're aware of that option now.

In a slight aside, I got a Diaspora invite yesterday. Its a bit quiet over there, but I do like the concept of open vs closed; facebook being privately owned has to cause problems in the long run. They need competition.

I agree that Facebook needs competition. But what's this diaspora, leadegroot? I tried searching but only got as far as a joindiaspora.com which seems to be in alpha testing.

Having 1 button would load the thread and injects the first posts details into the caption on facebook, is that what you want?
I don't know what I want except that I want a way for members of this forum to be able to share threads they like with their friends/network.

What I am trying to say is you can either share the thread and it only grabs the first post from the thread and puts that into facebook. You would only need 1 button per page of the thread.

If you want to be able to share an individual post then a button would need to be placed on somewhere on the actual posts. So they would be as common as the Reply Button or the Thanks Button. if you did this then the individual post would be in the caption pasted onto facebook.

The simplest facebook share link is simply: http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=[url] where [url] is the url of the page you want to share. You can fill that in with either javascript or php.

So http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http://experienced-people.net/forums/showthread.php/2800-How-do-I-add-a-Facebook-like-button-to-these-forums?p=19778 would look like this once clicked:

I should add that Facebook is promoting it's new iframed 'like' button instead. More details and preview at http://developers.facebook.com/docs/.../plugins/like/

Yep, joindiaspora.com is it - I guess the obvious domain was too expensive
It is still very alpha. I was surprised at that, as its been around for a while. Perhaps the people working on it have lives
I have 3 invites if anyone wants in!

Clinton don't know if you are still looking at Facebook but VB have just released a Facebook APP
I haven't looked into it and it costs money (not as cheap as a free like button)
I got out of bed today staring at a ghost. Who forgot to float away, didnt have all that much to say. Wouldn't even tell me his own name.

i am not sure if he released as a VB plugin or whatever, but Shawn Hogan did quite a nice implementation on Digital Point. Top white bar on each page which has a feature which allows it to be hidden too. I don't use DP, but do check out some of Shawns tools now and again and remember seeing this a little while back.

I have a bit more experience with this now having had to add two different kinds of 'like' buttons to a website recently. This is a page I've spent a bit of time on - https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/ I'm sure that if you can edit the index page of the forum you can add one of these.

Sorry if that's already been posted, I didn't go back through the whole thread to check.
