How do I add a Facebook like button to these forums?

And maybe Twitter sharing as well

Is it easy? I had a look at one or two options, but it's a minefield. With one option for vBulletin there's a guy here who complains it's adding 200k of js to his page. I don't want to add that much.

Other threads in the vB forum talk about signing up for yet more third party services such as AddThis and ShareThis. Do I really need those?

In fact, do I even need an FB account first?

You need an FB account for yourself first. And with that account you can create page for this site. What do you want to publish there? Only RSS file to start?

Addthis is a good option but i donīt know how complicated can be to integrate it on vB.

I don't use any on forums but I used sharethis.com which you can use to let people share without the need for FB or any accounts, you can see it on my beef pot roast recipe page just above the reviews, it also shows how many times people have shared the link/page which is nice. Just a little snippet of code you get to add.
That's different from a Like button, for that I think you would need a FB fan page.

I haven't done it on any of my forums yet. It is on my agenda of things to accomplish this year, but that's about how far I've progressed.

Thatīs correct. From reading i tought Clinton really wanted a fan page.

I do recommend to create a fan page. Even only with posting rss feed itīs a lot of valuable links that count alot.

Have you considered adding a floating footer bar or similar? I've used Meebo but there are others.

So what's a fan page when it's at home? We use air conditioners in our house rather than fans, it keeps the noise down.

    Do I need a Facebook 101?

I'm using facebook, a little, but I can't find words to explain its non-obviousness, not to mention that they may have changed things in the last few weeks, so everything I thought I knew is no longer true...
    Let me try.
    1. create an account for yourself, in your real name (required - no handles on facebook!)
    2. once logged in, create a page for this site (under 'adverts and pages') - you'll then be an admin for it
    3. get the code for the 'like' button - http://developers.facebook.com/docs/.../plugins/like/ fill out both the forms. One set goes in the head block, the other creates the actual button. you need the head block to link the like button to the page you created above

Facebook doesn't actually make a lot of sense

I'm not clear on what you want now, are you talking about giving people a way to share your content on their own FB or Twitter accounts or do you just want it to be a link to your own FB 'fan' page?
