    Hi from another newbie

    Hi everyone

Ive come on here after "meeting" clinton on another site, I have been reading quite a few of the posts and by the sounds of it you guys are very knowledgable in respect of online businesses and I'm hopeful that I will be able to tap into the knowledge you guys have. My background has pretty much been all IT based but having been made redundant for the 3rd time I decided I wanted to be in control of my destiny and started trading as an IT company - not a particulary good move considering the climate but still feel its the right time however I am also looking for otherways to make some money which I can use for the luxury items in life such as spending it on my kids etc.
I have dabbled a little in the past with affliate sites and given money to others for established sites etc and very much learnt a painful lesson so what I'm hoping to achieve here is finding a way to get a reasonable number of sites earning a reasonable amount - not looking to be greedy etc (not to start with anyhow )
So I will be posting on here whilst I learn and I hope you dont mind.

    Thanks

    Allan.

Hi sealtech, welcome aboard and we look forward to exchanging knowledge with you.

What has been your experience of buying so far and why was it a "painful lesson"?

    Hi Clinton,

My experience so far has been buying so called established sites from ebay ! I bought a couple that were amazon affliates and some more that were templates (didnt realise it at the time). The established sites had proven traffic and revenue but that was before I realised how much the guy was spending on ad words etc. So to cut a long story short I learned to look a little more before I jumped in .

I now have a hosting account with about 10 domains registered but undeveloped - hence coming here.

    Thanks

    Allan.

sealtech, the Buy/Sell/Trade/Exchange section lists a few opportunities I've found over the last few weeks. That may be a good place to do some browsing. If nothing else you may get some ideas on where to look for sites to buy.

I bought a couple that were amazon affliates and some more that were templates (didnt realise it at the time).
I've had template sellers swear that nobody ever buys a template without realising it's a brand new site.

Unfortunately when I purchased the templates I was just looking at the ££ signs - but it was a learning curve so dont suppose it was that bad after all. It has eventually brought me to this forum so not all bad

Hi Allan, nice to meet you here. I hope that your redundancy turns out to be a blessing in disguise and that it's a great opportunity for you. What areas of IT are you skilled in?

    Hi Fergal,

My background is mostly infrastructure - Pc's, servers, telephony etc but the last 10 - 12 years has been IT Management so looking at company strategy, compliance ITIL, ISO - that sort of thing. Not really got into anything web related until now (except usual browsing etc) so im a novice and after reading some of the tips on here im baffled - didnt realise it was so technical !! lol

    Allan.

Just ask when you stumble across something you don't understand. Or start a thread, it would be useful to others in your position. You'll find that more experienced members are quite happy to jump in and help.
