Flippa DOESN'T chalk up $30M in sales

"Old timers" would remember hooperman's post about Flippa's BS claims in his Flippa Chalks up $30M in sales thread.

They changed how they present their figures. The press release from this month states

Buyers and sellers trade around $2 million worth of websites and domains through the Flippa marketplace each month.
No mention of turnover or "Flippa Sales".

    Was it something we said?

Those numbers are still wildly exaggerated, unless they have begun removing the relisted sites from their turnover.

Also, their math doesn't add up, so they must still be including Sitepoint sales, though that information is absent from this press release.

At least they aren't trying to pass off the marketplace's theoretical turnover as the company's turnover, like I believe they have done in the past.

    Hi guys.
Not sure that the wording was ever intended to imply Flippa income. Either way, the text was updated before my time and hopefully removes any confusion.
Be assured, we remove disputed sales from the sales overall figure so relisted sites are not included ...

Thanks for the clarification. There were some less professional claims being thrown around informally and formally in the past.

Ad benitez17 says, there used to be a culture of exaggeration, hype and dressing up of figures. Maybe that's changed now.

Thanks, Andrew. What about sales that are disputed but not relisted, missing buyers, buyers refusing to pay success fees because of dissatisfaction with the purchase etc?

We pretty much do what we can to identify auctions where the sale did not end up going through and remove them from our sales figure. This can lead to the sales figure dropping on occasion (which led to some nail biting here when we clocked the $50M mark!). To this end, sales that are disputed whereby the seller is awarded a relisting are not included in our metric (regardless of whether or not they actually relist). The missing buyer is a scenario that would ultimately be disputed and the sale withdrawn. Dissatisfaction is a different issue as the sale has arguably gone ahead ...

Thanks Andrew, I had forgotten about this post of yours till you reminded me elsewhere. I was wondering, how do you treat sites that reappear for sale?

blippit.com showed here as sold for $200K. A month later it was sold by the same seller for $40K. How would something like that appear in your stats, $240K or $40K? I guess you automatically delete earlier sales of a domain if that sale was by the same seller.

if the site is relisted by the same seller or goes through our dispute procedure then the original "sale" is not counted in our total. as andrew said a year ago, this is why you'll see it go backwards sometimes, including recently when a large sale through a broker failed to complete after a protracted process.
