    The router lights flashing when I'm not at the computer is something that always bothered me.

    If you're worried about what's connecting to the internet from your computer, you might try something like Zone Alarm.

    I've used Fiddler to debug code, and it was pretty helpful. Wireshark is also a useful tool to capture traffic on your network port.
