    Thoughts on Domains & Naming

Some excellent thoughts on "why domains are getting less important" from Mr Williams, founder of blogger/twitter (so he knows a thing or 2 about naming/domains).

You might disagree with the opinions in this article, but the Panda 2.2 update also strengthens the argument that the need for exact keyword or clean .com/.co.uk domains might be on the decline, in terms of importance to pagerank/SEO success.

    Interesting times.

    Any thoughts/opinions?

I hope so. A competitor on mine with an exact match .org needs to fall from his mighty spot.

I think exact matches have already been weakened anyway. I have a Spanish site that is on the second page for speak Spanish (a pretty tough keyword) and I have no reference to that in the domain and no links back to the domain with that text. With a little push, I could probably get onto the first page.

Still, I'll take an exact match if it's available.

The advantage is still there, even if Google discounts exact match domains entirely (which wouldn't make much sense). When people link to sites using the domain name is anchor text, the exact match will still provide SEO help and tell the surfer something about where he's going. Likewise, it seems that a domain that matches the searched keywords is more likely to attract a click in advertisements (and probably organic search as well).

Still, maybe I'm being overly defensive. The author didn't claim that domains will become obsolete. He said they would be less important, but that he would still be ready to spend good money on a good domain name. His point was that he wouldn't feel as compelled to spend precious capital on a domain as he had before, that's all.

Seems a tad ironic that he says that and then working with Biz Stone his next big project seems to be on a one word generic .com domain Obvious.com I would have though Obvi.ous would have been just as good

Stone is teaming up with Twitter co-founder Evan Williams and former Twitter head of product Jason Goldman to start Obvious.
