What is the impact of the new ICANN rules?

With ICANN approving the use of generic domains and new extensions, some people are predicting that smaller website owners and domainers will be pushed out by these generic domains: http://www.sitepronews.com/2011/07/0...le-webmasters/

Are you concerned about this decision?

There could be an upside to it, imagine if all MicroSoft lovers or Apple lovers or Google lovers, moved to .ms .goog .apple wouldn't the internet be a much less trolled place lol.

I could imagine a company such as AOL believing they could force all their customers onto a .AOL world but I doubt it would work in the long run.

.com is pretty ingrained into people having people type www.hotels or www.travel (isn't travel already out there?) I can't really see much damage.

I can only assume the large boys will pack up their .coms and move to their own private address but you can bet they won't allow the .com's to lapse registration.

People with the sort of money to spend on those domains are also people who can afford TV advertising - unless oogle can be persuaded to dislike TV ads, there's no chance for the smaller people to compete with them in any case.
