OK, people can make a lot of money with apps but ....
someone else has the power to pull the rug from under you. (Like with "owning" a Squidoo lens).
Are you reliant on the whim of a third party for any of your income?

Tough that! Those guys put a lot of effort into developing their apps. To suddenly lose an income stream of several hundred GBP every day must have hurt!
I'm reliant on hosts (as we painfully discovered recently). Was very reliant on Adsense for a bit, but got out of that! Now am heavily reliant on just one partner for my finance /mortage sites - that's the price I pay for the favourable terms I have. With the other sites it's a wide mix of affiliate programs (both as a merchant and affiliate), link sales, product sales etc. But I have seen far too many websites coming up for sale where the owner was entirely reliant on one party for all the website's income.

Ouch. I rely on a single ad network for a decent amount of my income, but if they were to go away or end the deal I have negotiated, I could move to other networks without too much pain. I intentionally take steps to make sure that there are no single points of failure anywhere in my business, whether they be technical, monetary, or process related, and stories like this are one of the reasons I have never gotten involved with a Facebook or iPhone app.
Reliant on a host which I was painfully reminded of the other day like you Clinton. Hostgator had a ddos attack and all my sites went down. Amazingly the exact same thing happened the next day around the same time. I felt completely helpless....like someone had taken the keys to my house away and I couldn't get in! Don't like not having full control.
I'm in a partnership and relying on that person to be honest and have a good business ethic. So far so good.
I think the iphone thing is terrible as was what Squidoo did but I guess these are great examples of what not to do and why. I limit as much as possible relying on things such as AdSense and I look at it fully aware that if my account got taken down tomorrow there is nothing much I could do about it. Every $ is a bonus in that case not ones I have to have to fill the pantry.
We're reliant on all kinds of machines and software and they do get broken from time to time, but it's people who are the most unreliable. I've had three article writers all get back to me today to say they can't do any more work. So why wait to tell me? Why didn't you tell me two weeks ago when you took the decision?!
Sorry for the rant.
