Google to become UK copyright enforcer?

The UK government wants Google to push sites selling or hosting pirated content down in the SERPs, as well as cutting off advertising revenue.

    More here: http://www.eweekeurope.co.uk/news/go...opyright-39495

Do you think this is a reasonable request, or should Google avoid working with the British copyright police?

The UK government needs to be sectioned. What next? Putting John Prescott in charge of the pies?

If they want to get serious about copyright violations they should start by banning Google in the UK on the grounds that they are the world's biggest copyright violators with more "stolen" content that all the pirate sites in the universe put together.

It's not even like they make a big contribution to tax, the spongers. They took £8,000 million in revenue, more than £2,000 million of which was profit. How much did they pay in tax? £8 million. £1 in tax for every £250 in profit!

    All good points Clinton.

I think the search engines and other critical components of the internet are going to become the equivalent of regulated utilities in the next decade as governments look to exert the same amount of control over the internet that they have over every other form of media and communication.

They won't have a choice but to comply with requests like these at that point.
