    Some computer hardware

[[Thread split from here - Clinton, 17 Sept, 2011]][/URL]

thanks you guys! im so glad i found this site, its taught me so much already and i literally just discovered this whole idea. i think ill be doing a lot of studying/researching before i actually start putting anything into action, besides the fiddling around with wordpress i guess lol. im actually having some pc issues with 2 of my pc's and im borrowing my sisters at the moment so i cant really begin much quite yet. but, with a few repairs i should have them back up soon (god willing i get some extra cash for the parts! hey, if any one has a 17" WUXGA LCD layin around i could purchase id be thrilled! haha) so then i can really start gettin my hands dirty! So, i guess you folks will probably see me here and there throughout the forums, and i surely hope ill see you guys posting and helping me along (which im sure i will )!!!

If you can drive down to my place in Essex you could have an LCD monitor for free. I've got a couple of spares in the garage. Also, computer cases, heavy duty PSUs, keyboards, mice, other stuff. Free. Offer applies to any other posting member here as well.

I just had to click thanks on this post not for the offer of free hardware, but for the amusement afforded by the offer. As a new user, I assume TheGreenMan did not know his intro thread had responses from people in at least four different countries. I was laughing so hard, I started choking cause I couldn't breathe - Thanks for that

No offense intended to new users, but just thinking about the shipping cost alone from one of these countries, let alone hopping into my car and popping over to Essex, that would be higher than going to eBay and paying a hundred dollars and that was the amusement. I see this every once in a while from someone new to these discussions. It is amazing that the Experienced-People forum represents business knowledge from dozens of countries around the world.

Do we know where TheGreenMan actually is? Then maybe someone with stuff to spare could make him an offer of some surplus kit. I'm sure most of us must have heaps of it lying around. We do! But I'm not saying where I live so that's not much help.

Have I had a sense of humour failure or something? I took Clinton's offer seriously, and assumed that anyone in the area could go and benefit from some of his surplus kit.

Sure, he is from my home town of Chicago, IL. Even with your 'no fixed abode' location, Scotland would be quite the drive to Essex

Kay, Please forgive my sense of humour I almost wrote that apology into my post above. I did take Clinton's offer as serious, and there will probably be members able to avail themselves of the offer, but found the limitations on geography, due to the international flavour of this board, surreal enough to be amusing. Sorry...

Ken, I just didn't get what you meant about the distances involved. Chicago and Essex are only about 5 inches apart on my map.

We have a fair few people on these boards from Essex and others not too far away ...or who make trips to London (Essex isn't far from London).

All my kit is new and boxed, BTW, leftover stock from a company I used to run.

My apologies, I should have remembered TGM is in Chicago, he did mention it.

Confucious say - he who laughs last... is slow to get the joke. (I also forgot that TGM was in Chicago.)

Seriously, people really should think about selling or passing on their unused kit. I didn't realise Clinton's was new, but even old kit could have a value to someone.

Uh-oh, anecdote time. Back in 2005, we got stuck in London for longer than expected. We only had one laptop (mine) between us for the visit, and we were headed for the divorce courts if we didn't remedy that situation pronto. I HATE when Dave uses my computer, he does such weird things and never puts it back like he found it.

Anyway, I knew this guy on another forum and he sold us an old Mac for £50, all we had to do was collect it. It was so heavy that it took two people to lift it. But it worked and that got Dave on the internet without him using my computer. Relief!

Later we passed it on to our next-door-neighbour. She had done us some favours during our hellish time, and we'd made friends with her (adult) son. He'd expressed an interest in trying out a Mac to see what it was like. And he'd had a play around on ours. So, just before we left we said, "Come and get it. It's yours." Good feelings all round.

Don't let the stuff fester in the spare room or cellar. Give it away or sell it for a few bob. Go On! You know you'll never use it again.

This reminds me of another amusing story I read about Clinton and computer equipment in another thread here a long time ago. I bookmarked the article, and it is a great story if you haven't seen it before. It is titled PC builder takes 419ers for £171

P.S. This forum is the first place I had ever seen the word 'kit' used to describe computer equipment

(Yeah, I liked that story too.)

"Kit" is a very useful word. It can be used in all kinds of situations.

    "Get your kit off."

"Did you see the kit I bought?" (More modern version: "Did you see the kit I stole in the recent riots?")

Would you like to buy my eBook? It consists of a million ways to use the word "kit" in British English.
