Once the site was ranking and getting leads I would contact the businesses to try and sell them the website or the leads hopefully getting them into a bidding war. (If the sites didn't sell I would place ads on them and try and sell products from them)

I would do this several times until I had the money to move onto larger projects.
I would just approach the company directly and offer to build them a website. I approached a security company and got paid quite well to make them a simple website showing off their products and services. This way (as opposed to getting them to bid for it) you could possibly get some of the money upfront and at least you'll be fairly sure where your position stands with them.

The thing is here in Australia a website build costs roughly between $500 and $4000 which I suppose is ok money, my way I have sold a few and the sales have been from $10,000 to $40,000 for the same amount of work but there is some extra time period to wait.
Then there came a time, of Kings, Empires and Revolutions, blood just looks the same when you open the vein.

That's one of the good things about living in a well-populated, developed country i guess.
Companies here aren't too keen on spending anything that big on websites yet but I'm hoping it'll change as more ppl here get steady internet access.

A company that sees vetted leads will always pay more than something that is wishful thinking. I have been lucky and able to deliver free for a month leads from sites to companies and then after that month they always want to negotiate, a kind of try before they buy.

Companies are companies why not target uk/us/au/ca or any other market where business will pay more.

Clinton; Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what you're saying is; if you make $100 this week, put $10 or more of it away. Speaking as a USA citizen, my general opinion of us USA folks is; if we make $100, lets spend $110. So to Andy's question as to how you would build capital, tke71709 put it the simplest: "any way you can". The answer is different for each person though, because it depends on where their experience and passion lies. If fact, I'll go one step further, if you're truly passionate about a money making avenue, you should not only pursue it, but you're chances for success are very good. So, in terms of starting over, I think the very first step is to determine just what you're passionate about. If it doesn't make sense to immediately pursue what you're passionate about, then obtain an intermediate means of income, and build up enough capital so you can pursue your passion.

And don't forget your attitude while doing those jobs. Always do them to the best of your ability. In shitty little jobs, you'll probably get promoted to supervisor within a couple of months. A pal of mine worked on a building site as a schoolkid, as a teaboy. When they discovered he could read plans, he was promoted to chargehand.

And keep your eyes and mind open - you may spot an opportunity.
