    A Plus System

    Hi,

I've noticed on other forums (shhhhh! don't tell Clinton) that from time to time a poster will post a "+1" or more to show he likes what the poster says. We have "thanks" and "reputation" systems but is there any better way to quantify this? Sometimes saying "thanks" just isn't enough.

Even better might be a way to scale posts thus we can not only see posts others approve of but also how much they hit home.

    Thoughts?

    Andy

I think the current system works just fine.

I believe the thanks button is good for this forum because it does show specifically who thanked each post not just a total number of thanks/+1s

I'd much rather have a concise list of thanks than a page of +1's, especially when the original post is long, because it's quoted every time someone says +1.

I think the thanks button was introduced to replace the +1 -1 system and I much prefer the thanks system. It makes the threads smaller and also can give you a quick indication as to which post is worth reading and responding to.

This post had me laughing ...just the idea of negative Thanks was amusing.

I can see where subtracting Thanks from somebody would be a useful tool. At some point, a goofy user would end up being underground and buried, at which point the forum generates a smiley face icon with two X's over the eyes under the user's name. Some privileges are revoked until plus 1 posts get them back above ground level, but this couldn't be a manual tracking method...

I wonder if any forum owners have coded a No Thanks button to appear next to the Thanks button?

Now that's a change I would love to see! It would make for some interesting reactions I'm sure.

There used to be a system on Acorn where negatives could be given, and the "green bars" turned red if you went negative. I actually "went red" for a while because a couple of pedants over there wanted me to back up some statements with "web evidence", despite me saying that I was describing a hypothetical situation, so there was no evidence! WTH there are people on Acorn with "permanent" red bars (Red Kite comes to mind).

My experience with it showed me that people were voting against me because they did not understand what I was saying. The majority did understand, and their votes counteracted the negatives in a short time. EP does not need the negative vote because NOBODY gets away with "talking loud and saying nothing" for long around here.

All right all RIGHT! Gee, I give up. Though I also like KenW's idea of a No Thanks button.

Crabfoot, if I understood what you said, I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't understand what you were saying.
