You're not going to like what I say: My idea of what it's worth is a waste of time. You have to value a site based on what you think you can make out of it, what effort you estimate is needed and the risk you see of that expected profit not materialising.

In a detailed post elsewhere about a month or two ago, I gave an example. I examined a site that others were talking about and explained this point in more detail. I illustrated what I would do if I was planning on buying it, looked at how I'd monetise it, how much of profit I estimate (and why) and then came to a value conclusion. If anyone remembers that thread please drop us a link.

Clinton, I found your site and joined after reading this thread. I'm considering buying ChoToan.com (in this 4th round) and will work on its SEO relevancy (through new articles) and monetization. His current asking price is $4,800, which seems high to me. Especially given its $1,200 asking price just January of this year. So I'm wondering if there are thoughts on what this site is actually worth?

I do agree that the numbers are a little out of whack, but I see promise in the unique traffic numbers, assuming that they're accurate...

    Thanks,

    Ansel
Unless you can find out how much the site is truly making, what the number of visitors and page views really is, and how the owner is generating that traffic and revenue, you won't be able to come up with a good estimate of value. Given that the owner was making wildly different claims at the same time on different sites when he last tried to sell it, I would stay far away from the sale, unless you can pick it up for almost nothing.

Can I trust the unique traffic numbers from Compete.com? I'm not terribly familiar with how they gather their data, and therefore not sure if I can use it in my determination. Anyone have a handle on Compete?

Fair enough. I will dig for that post...

    No.

    According to Compete.

My bolding. The important points are that the sample size is too small and the figures you look at are only projections.

If you can, get the traffic data from the seller.
