    What's a locked domain?

Sorry if it's a stupid question. I tried to Google it but am none the wiser. What does it mean when a domain is locked and is this something the domain owner herself has control over?

Yes, the domain owner locks or unlocks a domain. "Edit" or "Manage" the domain name and change it if you choose. This is similar to changing the DNS entries, or other records associated with the domain name.

'Locking' of domains was brought in to try to limit domain jacking. Dunno how successful it is, but I leave all mine locked until I want to do a change of registrar.

Does anyone know what the difference is between locked domains and Domain Ownership Protection? GoDaddy seems to offer both and the Domain Ownership Protection is $14.99 for the year while the Locked option is free.

Domain Ownership Protection is when Godaddy changes your public whois info to display their own instead of your personal details - not worth it as some other registrars offer it for free

Whilst that is part of the service, there is a little more on offer than that:

I just tend to buy the domain privacy package (which includes private registration), but it's still $8.99/year.

Aren't these all just different names for the same thing + some services that are usually offered for free?

I know of two registrars who offer free WHOIS protection. Have an account with both, netfirms and namecheap. Netfirms right now has coms for $3,99 first year $10 normally if you use DOLLARDOMAIN coupon. Namecheap has cheap .info domains $2,99 first year and $9,70 a year. Godaddy is a good option is you don't plan to have domain privacy, otherwise it's too expensive.

Melissa, I believe he means literally type in DOLLARDOMAIN in the coupon field when checking out.
