Google is considering helping finance a deal to acquire Yahoo

Google is looking into how it can help finance a buy-out of Yahoo's core business. Does this sound like a way to get around the antitrust laws that stopped a partnership between them in 2008? Google has had an interest in running the advertising on sites Yahoo controls.

The Reuters article about this suggests an interest in more than simply helping to finance a deal.

Google would buy Yahoo simply to hurt Microsoft.

Remember that Bing powers Yahoo search now. Once Google buys them, that will come to an end very quickly and MS will lose that revenue.

I can only assume it's to try and kill off any chance of competition from MS, it can sometimes be cheaper to help destroy your competition rather than compete with them, but could it also be a way for Google to make MS pay a little bit more for the company?
They offered $47b in 2008 now Yahoo is possibly worth $20b
And they thought me broken, that my tongue was coated lead, but I just couldn't make my words make sense to them, if you only listen with your ears ... I can't get in

I can't imagine Google being allowed to buy Yahoo, or even be involved in its acquisition, due to antitrust concerns. Between the two of them they have 80% of the SE market in the US.

i too cant imagine this going through but I believe Google would like Yahoo for a few more reasons (read this somewhere else this morning, cant remember where):

    1) Yahoo premium publishers.
    2) Yahoo advertising network across media properties.
    3) Expansion of Google +
    4) Increase the price for MSFT if they are bidding.
