DigitalPoint is one extremely busy webmaster forum. But as it attracts a very wide variety of posters the quality of discussion in many threads is often poor. That said, it does have some great discussions on occasion and the owner, Shaun, is to be commended for building the forum to its current size and managing a whole host of modifications and hacks to customize it for his audience.

One such move was the revamping of the section for buying and selling websites.

What do you think of the Digital Point marketplace for selling websites?

Not only is DP's discussions poor but I think we all know the marketplace is even worse. Once in a while there may be a good buy but generally the seller expects an over inflated price and is non-negotiable - its not to say that there arent good deals there - I have picked up a few good sites from DP but its rare and it requires extra caution. IMHO.

Shawn was away for 2 years and the forum was in pretty bad shape. Now that he got back and implemented premium memberships and other new features it has improved.
I picked many good deals on DP over the time. But it's mostly filled with low quality, low income sites, so anything with higher income is quite rare there.

Basically if you're after some cheap, small adsense sites you can find plenty in there.

Actually, I'm surprised at some of the really good buys that turn up in DigitalPoint. Within the last couple of months there was a thread where someone was asking for $180,000 for a finance site. It used to be #1 in Google UK for top insurance and mortgage terms. It had been neglected for a while and the rankings had dropped, but it's still a first page site in the SERPS for several big money terms.

I liked the site so much that I made the seller an offer and we're in the process of completing the transaction. Yes, I bought it.

People in the thread were giving it a lot of flak but, let's face it, typical DP posters aren't in this league and most aren't in a position to value this site or develop a vision for it. DP's owner, Shaun, stepped in to point out that it was actually not such a bad deal for someone who knew what to do with the site.

But still nobody bit.

The important point to note here is that this never made it to Flippa. If I had been monitoring only Flippa, I would not have ever known about this site for sale.

It does need a bit of work and am going to have to employ someone to do it, but it currently earns close to $10K a month and could be improved to $40K-$50K pm. I may end up screwing up and losing my investment - or not having the time to do what needs to be done - but that doesn't change the fact that as it stands now it's a pretty good deal.

And it doesn't change the fact that DP can turn up some surprises.

DomainMagnate, yes, I like the premium membership in DP. I was one of the first to sign up. Great value. mpcovcd, why do you say that sites sold at DP are overpriced? I have found the opposite to be true when compared to Flippa, plus there aren't as many restrictions on how the sale can be completed or negotiated. Sure, there is a ton of junk there, but there is at Flippa as well, and I don't get a bill when I buy a site at DP.

For some reason, DP users seem to have some sort of inferiority complex, because most times when I see a quality site listed, there are people who tell the seller not to waste their time, because no one on DP has any money.

I don't understand why they believe that serious buyers would only look in one place for sites to buy.

I agree. I have bought multiple sites with traffic, content, and an OK domain for $5 there in the past, because the seller gave up on the site and just wanted to get rid of it. It's hard to not make a site profitable when someone is basically giving it to you.

That's why I don't understand why Flippa is so focused on the low end market, because if buyers knew what other options were out there, the people selling their turnkey sites for $99 or $149 would never make a sale.

I tried selling there one. Got bids of 20-50 bucks for my website but I ended up selling the website for US500 somewhere else. There were lots of low ball buyers and lots of scammers too. Almost got cheated with the sudden paypal dispute thing from them
