Useful Web Business Industry Publications, Subscriptions or News Sites

Do you subscribe to a magazine, news source, or newletter site that provides quality information on running your online business? A useful industry news aggregation resource? A newsletter subscription that is extremely helpful? A site that contains useful articles for making money online? Free or paid doesn't matter (as long as you are not recommending your own). In this day and age, however, a paid subscription requires something extremely special.

Often, resource threads like these have a limited life because sites and publications come and go. Often, even the very best information sites do not survive. Do you know of any that would be useful for EP members?

I know everyone reading this is a member of Experienced-People.net, so the first resource would have to be the Experienced-People Front Page of this forum. This home page contains great articles for running web businesses. As EP does not engage in the blatant profiteering of (most) other forums, this site is a useful resource.

Website Magazine is a well-established industry publication. They have free and paid subscriptions. You can receive a complimentary (if qualified (and every EP member reading this would be qualified)) subscription of 4 issues per year (one every 3 months). The paid subscription is for the mailed print edition. Every few days, I receive an email from them with useful knowledge.

Affiliate Classroom is an example of a great publication that didn't survive, but still has amazing knowledge available online. Even though the last issue was in August of 2009, I still see products, special offers, and ebooks being built around articles that appeared on its pages.

DNJournal is for domainers. They have industry news and cover articles and events related to domain name sales and speculation. The editor and founder is Ron Jackson, and the magazine keeps track of domain sales, sales charts, and the industry's latest news. (Don't miss reading his NameNewbie.com site for a primer on domaining.)

A question about AdSense blogs reminded me of two domainer sites that are useful for news.

Domaining.com aggregates blog articles about monetizing and selling domain names.

Namebee.com is a domaining blog aggregator and domain name news portal.

Each of these sites have blog article titles from sites focused on domaining. It is handy to be able to review all of the titles in a single place. I review these a couple times a week, just skimming titles for potentially useful information.

If anyone has links to sites that aggregate news for other areas specific to web businesses, please post them here.

I like techdirt's case studies. They look at various models like how to make money from giving your content away for free (my favourite), the Chinese style of e-publishing (the nice face of bait and switch), creative experiments with content monetisation, the pay what you want model etc.

They talk a lot also about their "CwF+RtB=$$$" formula (Connect with Fans (CwF) and give them a Reason to Buy (RtB))... though that may not be so relevant for us.

Internet Retailer Magazine is a new online magazine just learned about through Artracer's link to an article. This looks like great information for online businesses.

Entrepreneur Magazine is one that I've been reading for decades. This is more about business in general, but is always interesting information.

StartUps Magazine is also from the publishers of Entrepreneur, but is only published three times a year. The information is great for new business owners just getting started in business.

All of these magazines have back issues available for online reading. Don't forget If you find anything useful in these that would help others here, please be sure to post a thread with details and a link to the information.

Webmaster Radio is a broadcast service that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their broadcast schedule covers marketing, SEO, eCommerce, Cyberlaw, affiliate marketing and more. They do run advertising in the shows (and will play endless audio ads when you visit their homepage, unless you stop the playback to go to a specific broadcast). Even the ads can be educational

I avoid any scheduled broadcasts, and prefer the podcasts. The navigation on the left side takes you to podcasts by subject, but some of these are dated. Even the older broadcasts contain useful content. The most recent shows are displayed along the top under the caption 'Now Playing' and 'Next Up'. Clinking on any of these graphics will also lead you to the podcasts.

Although this is not a magazine, it is an excellent resource for education, providing immersion into specific topics of interest.

I've also been watching PaidContent recently and they've got some good commentary on our industry. Flipfilter's suggestion in another thread was VentureBeat which is going to occupy me for a few hours today (damn you, flipfliter!)

    Ken, I'm stickying this thread.

Duh, how the &$%* could I forget that £&@£*$ saltydroid?!

Major omission there. But I love his site and the jibes he takes at the big name marketers and MMO specialists. BluehatSEO doesn't post often, but that's a site with some supercool ideas for the techminded. There was one other thread on here that mentioned those two and in fact, tke71709 should get the credit for first mentioning them ... let me go find it.

<added> Here it is! What Blogs Do You Have In Your RSS Feeder? I highly recommend visiting that thread to read the OP (and please, please post in there to tell us the best RSS feeds in this industry that YOU are subscribed to)

And if anyone can track down ol' Griz and tell me where he's posting, I'd love to read his stuff.

Both of the following are paid subscription magazines that specialise in SEO and online marketing. Their free content is great, and paid subscriptions add value.

Visibility Magazine comes out four times a year, and they provide access to back issues with high quality education. They also publish an SEO Buyer's Guide with further information on their Top SEOs site, which also includes a comprehensive Vendor Directory.

Search Marketing Standard magazine is also a paid subscription. Their home page has quality articles on up-to-date issues and events. Their back issues are not available online, but can be purchased. This magazine features SEM company information that details expertise by company, and maintains a calendar of events for the SEO/SEM industry.

The original Griz article on Blogspot linked in the other EP thread is gone, but a copy is here and his blog archives are at GrizzlyBrears.com

SEOmoz has some awesome information including SEO Industry Survey recently publish, Search Engine Ranking Factors published last in 2011 (every 2 years), Google Algorithm Change History and The Beginners Guide to SEO. All can be accessed from their blog at SEOmoz.org/blog . Every Friday they do something called Whiteboard Friday which are quick lunch and learn style, 10 minute or so video clips staring industry thought leaders that almost always provide viewers with actionable information that can be used straight away. All of the resources mentioned are free. SEOmoz also pro subscription which provides Pro users access to a host of tools. Some of these tools can be used by free, registered users with limitation as is common with these kind of free accounts. I highly recommend them and have been a Pro subscriber for a few years now, but am otherwise not affiliated with the company.

Adobe Systems Inc. has been expanding into marketing; A recent thread reminded me they have an excellent resource available.

CMO by Adobe appears to be a cross between a blog, news site, and magazine. They also have a Europe Edition digital magazine available.

Adobe Systems (which you probably know as a software company (Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop)) created and has been building the Adobe Marketing Cloud with a focus on becoming a one-stop resource for all marketing needs.

Their CMO (chief marketing officer) by Adobe publication offers digital marketing information which consists of both curated articles and exclusive content. They have a number of white papers and research reports available, but require you register to obtain the downloads.

Adobe Systems acquired Neolane last year, which operated a software platform for marketing campaign management, and turned it into Adobe Campaign.

To Adobe Systems credit, they know education can be means to an end; They will benefit by educating business owners about marketing, as this entrepreneurial knowledge can only serve to build their brand and business
