Case in point: Akismet, Wordpress' anti comment spam plugin, just caught a pingback from this autoblog site referring to a post we published on Friday. If it hadn't, a link back to this autoblog would have ended up in the comments section.

When someone nicks your content, there's no harm in getting some free banner ads on his site

Downside: people can't click those images to get to your site.

Not a problem. If you can be bothered, go further and make them animated gifs or redirect the gif to an swf or some html code. I'm sure there are ways to get a link out of it. In the above example, as he didn't strip out the text links to my pages his visitors will likely end up on my site anyway. But if his was a PR7 page that stripped links, I could have taken the trouble to find a way to insert a link in there.

I have a glossary site of business jargon. If you do a define: search Google provides you the entire definition of your term that they've "borrowed" from my site. They get away claiming "fair use" under copyright law because they reproduced just two lines, but they've bypassed my site altogether (intentionally) so you get to see their ads and never get to see mine. I'm not whining about it, I'm just explaining the facts so I can say...

They aren't your friends, screw them if you can.

They've refined their theft and have a new format for displaying all the definitions they've stolen.

In other news Bing is now getting in on the act and linking directly to images.

Search engines are always looking for new ways to screw you.

I see sites in the SERPS in highly competitive areas using these tactics and doing very well out of them.

I would be one of them. In fact, I've outranked experienced-people.net on some keywords (this is how I've first come across it) for some time purely by doing this - I've abandoned the keywords since but the site still ranks somewhere relatively high.

For the past 1.5 years only 2 blogs were de-indexed and there's a footprint so obvious that a horse could see it. Mind you, I have a writer write content for the blogs which is "hand spun" across all of them.

Those are the ones, Luke. Anyone tried them? Willing to fess up? I could use some advice.

I've used both, AMA and UAW - there are better networks.
