The single SKU website - Capitalizing on the hot Xmas Toy (or not in this case)

So my 5 year old son comes home with a letter to Santa that they had to write in school in his backpack. In this letter he asks for a digital camera (which he has wanted for a while and which has already been purchased) and Smokey the Fire Truck (which I have never heard of).

So I hit Google this morning to find some information on this toy and near the top of the SERPs I see the following listing:

The url alone tells me this is probably a thrown together site based around Adsense and affiliate marketing but I still want to see what they have done with it from a professional curiosity perspective (heck I once had a site about plus-sized bikinis).

The site is done in WordPress, has a bunch of keyword filled pages, a big picture linking to Amazon to purchase the product. So far not horrible but certainly not great. I am fairly fond of the keyword in bold, keyword in bold and italic, use of highlighting, etc... as it reminds me of 3 years ago but I digress.

The part that makes me laugh though (and their major oops) is their choice of review. I won't repost it here out of respect for the forum rules but when I steal ooops repurpose a review I make sure that it presents the product in the best possible light. Perhaps the owner of the site should have done the same.

Just had a look at the site and see what you mean - very basic and to the point but a stupid choice of review

Then again, you wouldn't question the honesty of that review ... I'm just wondering about setting up a couple of sites next Christmas, one selling toy drums and the other offering to take down the site with the toy drums when a donation target has been achieved. I had a really nice tin drum when I was three but it disappeared one day, never understood that.

Post a really long review, something like the MS Windows Licence Agreement, and nobody'll bother reading it anyway!

You would, IMHO, really need an EMD to make it worthwhile and large volume so you need to target the hot toys like this site did.

All in all, you can whip out sites like this in no time flat based on a simple template and some very basic text. They are churn and burn sites with little or no long-term value so you can either drop them the next year or if by some chance they get links you can 301 them to next year's sites.
