I don't actually think they thought of that, I think they thought that a static site that hasn't had any change for several years but was an influence on their linking algo wouldn't have new links without a nefarious reason.

This is the same reason I believe their nofollow tag will eventually fail and is failing now, I think they are trying to find other ways of getting around the huge takeup of nofollow.
Then there came a time, of Kings, Empires and Revolutions, blood just looks the same when you open the vein.

You'd think it would have crossed their minds after seeing what happened when the SEO myth 'fresh content helps you rank well' caused an explosion in machine spun crappy content. I bet if the graph of the vokume of their index were available, you'd see a spike during the period.

People might stop using it now that activity on their blog or site is a good thing.

Assuming of course that the premise is correct in the first place. This is the only place I've heard of it yet so I'm going to be looking out for mentions elsewhere.

I would think there would be some uniqueness in the quotiant that is required otherwise they would be in the same place they were before.

You have to remember what we are talking about is basically black hat stuff, taking over old sites and placing new links, really isn't the realm of a whitehat seo is it lol

I don't distinguish between white and black hat, it's a meaningless distinction IMO, but that's another conversation.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for mentions of this re-animation penalty (for lack of a better name yet) on the major SEO forums/sites. If it turns out I can't actually work next week I'll have a chance to do some serious catching up on my reading!

It makes sense, but I've still been getting very good results with this method. I think most of the sites being linked to could be considered "old & trusted" sites as well, so that might explain the discrepancy.

My very recent strategy of finding private blog networks with certain stipulations has done me well. I'll continue to go this route until something negative happens, but finding the right network can be a real goldmine.

Quite honestly, I have found success in all sorts of places, Fiverr being one of them. Being lazy by nature, I've even ordered some pretty awfully spun articles that people have submitted to directories, etc. and those gigs produced SERP improvements. That's why it's always been hard for me to justify paying some of these kingpin SEO services the types of money they require.

I haven't found a better replacement for a well run, highly protected private network.

Could you start another thread on private blog networks? Is there a trick to finding them? What do the prices run for links?

Why are you not creating such a network for yourself? It's simpler than you'd think. It would take some time to get to a <PR3 or so, but it would be worth every penny when you get there.

I created my own private blog network by happenstance, so I cannot really take much credit for it, but if you're interested, I could share more details about how I did it.

I am negotiating with someone regarding my own network as we speak. They're going to build it for me.

I am certainly willing to listen to any details you have regarding how you did it yourself. Time is my enemy these days and it prohibits me from doing the necessary due diligence when it comes to high PR domain auction back link research, but the more I know the better.
