Going on from SOPA a PIPA there seems to be moves by various states and organistions to move to seperated internets. It's quite some read but goes on to explain (well I think so) what various players are doing to maybe overcome ICAAN (US GOV) control of the internet.
Then there came a time, of Kings, Empires and Revolutions, blood just looks the same when you open the vein.

A pretty comprehensive review, grynge. Thanks for the link. The growth of the Web and its spawn is a wonderful demonstration of the fact that innovation is a bottom-up process. Governments, big corporations, etc., are territorial entities - their efforts to control development and protect their interests all stifle innovation, and eventually fail.

Modern communications technology (whose rapid innovation is enabled to large extent by the Web) is advancing so fast that the control freaks barely have time to define what it is they want to control, let alone put in place the means to do so. Watching all this happen gives me a strong motive to live as long as I can - as long as I can still make sense of it.

Excellent article. I especially liked the forward looking predictions of how the web will look in decades to come, with a discussion on Internet segmentation (as the early stages are happening now).

The problem with bureaucrats in governments making law for online control is a typical lack of comprehension of technology. SOPA and PIPA as cases in point, the proposed law was written and promoted by technophobic preschoolers who do not comprehend basic business, nor the tech in place to enable today's business. Even so, a single point of control at least establishes protocol and standards to be implemented as a single network.
