They make a good point. Google makes a page quality judgment based on the proportion of space above the fold that's devoted to ads. By that measure their SERPS page is one of the lowest quality pages on the internet. Not only is over half the space devoted to third-party ads, the other 50% contains a lot of "ads" for Google's other properties.

    I agree. But.

I **think*** Google would include ***their*** intent on the quality judgment too.

Google's intent for their SERPS - getting visitors to click away (preferably on ads).
Googles intent for the page a visitor lands on after the SERPS - the most relevant information on the keyword topic. Not ads - well not in your face ads anyway.

of course this is an over generalisation when you build into the case that they have their own comparison sites etc. but I think the page ad quality part of the algorithm makes general sense.

the real kicker of course is that Google is fuelling almost all ads above the fold :-)
