    Are .coms worth more? Yes
Do they necessarily rank better thanks to Google favoring them? I have yet to see any proof offered in this thread.

It's an easy enough hypothesis to test if some wants to bother doing it.

    1) Buy obscure domain name in multiple extensions.
    2) Create gibberish content.
    3) Make Google aware of the site through webmaster tools (NO outside links as this could bias the results).
    4) See what ranks highest (not just on day 1 but over time).

I'd love someone to try this out and test it, although I don't have the time, inclination or energy to do it myself!

How would you do the content to make it fair though as original content on each will make a difference in ranking and the same content will most likely rank the first domain found by Google at the top? My suggestion would be to write an article and use spinning software to make it unique, but ultimately, the same.

I think you'd have to be careful not to include any keywords in the original article. Maybe something as simple as using a lorem ipsum generator would work. I only say that as I know nothing about spinning software.

Exactly.... You want to minimize the number of variables being tested so no keywords whatsoever in the text of the article. You'd also need to keep as many other things as possible exactly the same (outgoing links, design, number of words, etc...).

Then the only variable that you can't really control is which page that Google finds first.

    Ok,
Give me a market with a long ail keyword that I can rank with in a couple of days and we will see what happens.

in regards to poker.org it doenst have any pages indexed in google because they have taken down the site and are redoing it. Thus they have no rankings. Once they re-launch they will get rankings quite quickly. The site has over over 7500 links and is 12 years old
