Working online for 13+ years... A successful failure!

    Hello all,
I have been working online exclusively since 1997, when I was just a wee-little chap. I have always had an "entrepreneurial spirit". When I was young I lived in an empty house, my father and mother both working literally day-and-night to provide for us. We didn't struggle, in fact, in many ways I was spoiled. I was spoiled with material goods like video games, toys, nice clothing, etc... The limited time I would see my parents they were frustrated with their jobs, burnt out by their efforts, and would talk about how poorly they were treated at work.

My friends found my "parentless" lifestyle very appealing. They talked about how great it would be to have no parental restraints -- like me. But, the grass is always greener. All I wanted was to have my family. I especially wanted more time with my father. But, he did what he could -- loved me with gifts and worked, worked, worked.

I decided at an early age that I was not going to be at the mercy of my employer like my father was. I was not going to miss the important events in the lives of my family. I was determined to lay my own path and be my own boss. And, I have never let up... I have been working exclusive from home, and online, since 1997.

I have a passion to help others do the same because the one thing I know for sure is that TIME is much more valuable than MONEY. Money comes and goes... Time flows only one direction. You cannot buy it, store it, replenish it. The moments we miss in life are gone forever. The moments my father missed can never be recovered.

This has also strongly affected my views of success. While by mainstream standards I am not very successful (almost ALL of my clients make at least 10x more $ than me each year) and I do still struggle to pay bills at times, I measure success by the TIME I have to spend with the ones I love. And there, is where I am really successful. I have a wonderful family and, although I am still far from my ultimate goal (retirement), I have been able to be there for every step. From waking up all night to a crying infant who needs a bottle and a diaper change, to seeing my oldest daughter in plays and recitals, to hearing every "first word"... I haven't missed a moment!

Clinton contacted me and has provided me much inspiration (THANKS!)... Maybe I too can soon be "semi-retired" and have even more time for my family and for God -- and not have to worry about the bills so much! Then I can better do what I love online too -- helping others change their lives!

So, I am excited to have found this online community. Or, rather that it has found me. We will see where it goes from here. :-)

    christopheravell, welcome to experienced-people.net.

For those of you who don't know, christopheravarell is the blogger who points out Flippa scams at http://idontgiveascam.com/ Heads up to TrustButVerify who brought him to our attention in this thread.

Chris and I have had a long chat on gchat today and we seem to have a similar philosophy to making money online / building sites that add something useful to the 'net.

Chris, if it's one thing that worked for me it was building (and buying) good resources with evergreen content, monetising them and moving on to the next one. Over the years you'll end up accumulating several hands-free sites that keep generating money without too much work. It's not a model everyone likes, but it works for me. I could be more aggresive and probably earn more money but, like you, family is a big priority and again, like you, I enjoy spending a lot of time with the kids. That's the bit that's priceless.

You're a smart chap, I have no doubt you'll achieve what you want. And if there's any way we can help on here, please do let us know.

    Again, welcome to EP.

    Hello christopheravell,

I like your philosophy on life, its very similar to myself but I have as yet not been able to live up to it, although I am trying to rectify that!
Successful failure is a very interesting title, I think if I could put something together and only make £1 I would consider that a success!(But my standards are very low )
Joking aside, from reading your post I do understand that is not how you measure your success!
