Exclamation FP - Hot Traffic Tip! A MUST HAVE

    ***WARNING***

This can be used or abused. I will post both ways and elaborate on how to go about this the ethical and business savvy way. I will make special note of how not to do this, so that you may avoid making a huge business building mistake (long term).

    Expired Domains:

Domains that others have let expire that you can pick up for really decent prices. Most times as low as 7-10 bucks each!

    Tools:

    Register Compass ($37/month)
    mydnstats.com
    urlappraisal.net
    statbrain.com
    dropday.com (limited free)
    Alexa.com
    wayback machine

***I primarily use Register compass for researching domains and then one of the other freebies listed to confirm my results, as it really automates most of my searching for me.

    So how it works:

A lot of people don't develop domains into sites, and then let them expire. Most of these have very little to zero traffic. Naturally, we do not care about these. We want expired domain traffic.

So we do searches on the expired domains that have good alexa ranking, doamin age, backlinks,PR (not as important),Dmoz or Yahoo directory listings etc. to determine which domains are winners.

One of the cool search functions I use frequesntly on RC is filtering by my keywords. SO now I not only find sites that have traffic still going to them, but they are related to my niche! (That means pretty targeted traffic!!!)
Just to make sure, when I have my list of winners, I verify they are indeed related enough to my niche. Then I register the domains in bulk and host them (setup a 301 redirect for all the backlinks to point to the root domain) and then redirect the main doamin (root) to my new site/new purchased site.

As an added bonus, with several domains pointing to your site tat have established rankings etc, it shows that your site is valuable to Google, so any work you do for SEO/organic traffic will be recognized faster and you will more credibility with your newer site. (It isn't perfect, but it works very nicely for getting traffic right away, and maintaining the folw of traffic tyo your site in the future)

    ***IMPORTANT!!!***

When you sell your site/list it. You will need to make mention of your traffic and where it comes from. People will be impressed with your ingenuity (trust me). Especially if you do you homework on the domains and get good at picking winners (it ain't hard, think caveman)

If you fail to mention this, and/or do not sell the expired traffic domains with you listing...you are scamming. The buyer will inherit a site that does not have good traffic anymore! PLease use this responsibly and ethically. It makes good business sense to treat your buyers good. Because buyers are more times than not, repeat bnuyers if you treat them well.

    Happy traffic snatching.

Very nice share. Never tried expired domains, this seems like it could be worth a shot.

Would there not be more value in putting a site up on DMOZ listed domains that just doing a 301? People are desperate for DMOZ listings these days and will massively overpay for sites that are listed/have some age.

    j/k

Actually Thomas, you would be correct. I was just giving a low dowon on "the quick and the easy". DMOZ or any Directory listed domains, it would be a better use to creat the site, throw up good content and moentize it even maybe. Then you can sell an entire NETWORK of sites/domains, giving your site a more business package like feel.

Yeah, makes sense. Wasn't trying to pick holes, more extend the discussion.

Would you put all the sites/domains on 1 IP or spread them out across different c-classes?

Re: Hot Traffic Tip! A MUST HAVE

Well, I would say target different sets and spread them out. Thats what I do anyway, just to be safe. For instance, If I have a hosting site I just bought and I search the domain listings for the term "hosting" in the domain name...I will group all the winners together (say 5 for example). Then when I target a demographic of say,"webmaster" as my term, it isn't as targeted, but still brings in the right kind of traffic. I would list those on another hosting setup for sure, preferrably different hosting company so that I can get a different C class. ANd I appreciate your contribution. Thats why I posted this thing, to help and get feedback!!! So thanks for the input!

I showed Thomas some analytics last night on a site that had expired domains (demographically targeted)... The traffic was pretty solid for the last 2 months at 4-6k / day.

Leber - There are many more methods and uses for expired domain traffic I just made a video to go into the VIP archives for FP, assuming that Thomas and Bryan like it well enough.

Surftrish - Using my methods, I am able to get relaed keyword domains most times. Here is a hint: I don't always target niche markets...and I have been known to target expired domain traffic based solely on demographics

great idea. frankly, I was always moving to fast and focused on volume to do that. I have stopped building sites for now. Needed a break to assess and tweak what I already have.

On something someone else said, I do also use expired domains for my link indexing system - though not the same as link building. I have over 100 self-hosted sites for indexing backlinks and then many more web 2.0.

It always pays to start out ahead of the curve.

Re: Hot Traffic Tip! A MUST HAVE

I have a question about register compass. I just signed up and started playing around with the filters. I can't seem to find any sites that generate any decent traffic for 7-10 bucks that have decent alexa ratings, are either listed in the yahoo directory or dmoz.. What am I missing here?

could be your other filters. if any are too restrictive. Remember that the domains fluctuate.
