FP - Copyright sign on your website?

I have a forum. I'd like to know if it's okay to add a copyright sign at the bottom of my index page. It looks cool. For example, "copyright 2010 - 2011".. It kinda shows how long the site has been online for and personally I think it's cool. So I want to know if I can put it there? Obviously, I haven't really gotten copyrights from wherever you get it. Just wanna know if it's all right to put it there.. Lol. Let me know what you think esp. experts here.

Don't see any reason why not. Content on your site is your intellectual property so protect it however you can.

I've always put them there with out getting anything official. I would just do it. I never really thought about it though. My guess is most people don't think about it and just put the copyright tag on their site.

Technically, it's a forum so the content is what people post and I haven't really seen a forum putting that. Why don't you guys remove this "Powered by vBulletin™ Version 4.1.1
Copyright © 2011 vBulletin Solutions, Inc. All rights reserved.
MMORPG Games Theme - By SiteFTW.com"?

But thanks for the advice. I'll go ahead and put it there.

Is Flipping Enterprises Ltd. a real registered company?

My last post went for moderator approval and now it's gone.

Thomas edit: yeah, sometimes they get picked up by the vB filter for some reason into the mod queue. I approved it now.

The license for VB requires you to keep the "Powered by vB" note at the bottom. Same with our licensing agreement for the script. Removing them would void our license for both.

And yes, Flipping Enterprises Ltd is a real registered company

That sucks man. There is a reason why you 'paid' for it.

You can pay extra to have the credits removed, but it seemed pretty pointless. Most people expect to see it in the footer anyway as most bigger forums run on vBulletin. Not really a problem, I doubt anyone scrolls that far down anyway.

Re: Copyright sign on your website?

My understanding with forums is that there are some legal ramifications. I know that you can be held liable for content that is posted on your forum. Thats why if you have any information you don't want everyone to have access to then you make private sections on your forum. I know a few years ago on a forum I worked for we had a member post some pictures and he posted them on the forum. They weren't vulgar but they did show this group of guys dressed in super hero costumes who were all gay. He titled it the super hero thread and it was extremely popular. Well I guess one of the guys found it and sued the forum. We moved the pics to the recycle bin (it is a section that only admins had rights to and it where we kept all deleted threads). As far as the copyright goes there are policies you have to abide by with vbulletin and they are very strict about it. If your worried about someone copying your code dont because vbulletin has done a good job at protecting their code plus it's mostly all php files, and sql databases on the backend. You can put copyright but if it was me i would just put founded 2010 or something along those lines next to the copyright line. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the informative post. I don't use vBulletin. I use Mybb. They do require you to put 'Powered by Mybb'. If you don't they won't give you support in their support forums. That's all. The reason I asked this is because, suppose, I have a blog then putting a copyright tag would make sense as that's the content that I built. But mine is a forum, different people post different stuff. But I got it now.. it doesn't really matter even if I put the copyright tag without doing any official stuff.
