FP - Domain Auctions.... where to begin?!

OK, so I splashed out a couple hundred bucks on domains last week. I figured if I can get a few good ones, I can at least sell them for a few bucks more than what I paid for them... even if I sell each one for $20, that's still at 100% profit.

Well, that's the theory. I kind of jumped the gun after little research and got a little bit excited seeing a few good domains available and rushed in and bought them... now I'm wondering what the hell do I do with them!?!!

Perhaps a School Boy Error, but still I'm a little bit confused about where to start selling them and how to sell them. I've got them listed on GoDaddy's Auctions and on Sedo, but I'm not getting anywhere!

Any advice? Most of them are decent domains for example I've got "helpandadvice.net" and "officialpoker.info", I've got one .com "newsimportant.com" which I'm hoping to use for myself on my own project (probably an autoblog), but right now any advice as to what path I should follow would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

    Thank you guys! :-)

From what I've picked up, flipping domains can be more speculative then flipping sites. However, people certainly make money at it.

From the sites you listed, I'd see if anyone owns " officialpoker.com ", try to contact them and see if they want your .info version.

The only other suggestion is to see what other characteristics the domains have -- PR, backlinks, age, traffic, KWs, etc., and sell based on those as well. People buy domains for many reasons, and sometimes it's not the name.

    Good luck!

Yes it is not all making money selling domains contrary to what you might imagine. One good tip if you have the .com for example is try and sell to people who have the .net, or .org domains. One thing might be worth considering is put them on DP to test the water and also building sites and flipping them for a few extra bucks on eBay or other sites like Flippa. Don't expect every domain to make you a profit it's like stock and shares the good ones hopefully cancel out the bad ones. If all else fails get some adsense on them or do a revenue share with some one who wants sites for adsense(you supply domain they supply SEO or traffic).

You may have unfortunately gotten some dud domains that will probably never sell. Check out dnsaleprice.com to see what's been selling recently. If you have any domains with buyer intent like "built in outdoor grills.net" (available), "armpit acne.com (available and yes sounds gross but is category defining and has a buying market), and "lcd tv specials.com (just expired and is available now, gets 1,300 exact searches a month with plenty of ad competition) then I would build them out and either keep them or sell them as established websites in 2 to 3 months from now.

The bottom line is that the buyer of a domain wants to get as close to money as they can. If the domain is short and memorable it will be easier for them to brand, market, and make money with. If the domain name has intuitive keywords and will be easy to get high rankings and traffic, then they'll make money with it and it will be more valuable to them. If the domain is all of the above and already has traffic that is being successfully monetized, then it will be worth way more to the buyer.

With domains always think quality, not quantity and you'll be fine.

LyNHS - Know the feeling! Just been buying a bunch of domains myself, it's a tad too addictive for my liking! Are they auctioned/dropping domains or were you scratch registering them (sure there is probably a proper phrase for that but I don't know it).

I'd try list one or two over on DigitalPoint domain forum and see if you get some biters, might give you an idea if you are on the right lines with what people want - without having to pay listing fees and the like.

Re: Domain Auctions.... where to begin?!

Thanks for all your info guys! Funnily enough, a few hours after I posted this I went another round and bidded like crazy on more domains.... hell it's addictive! The ones I originally bought were, to put it your way ChilliMonster, "scratch registering" (Lol!)... but, after seeing some decent ones on GoDaddy auctions I got my competitive bidding hat one. All in all, the domains come up to just over $5000 Estibot value and I paid just over $600 for them all. I'll probably premium list my BEST one at Sedo to test the water, and I'm going to keep a few for my own projects in the future.

    Thanks again guys!
