    The story:
Baker was in the library, happily sipping coffee working the night grind, actively clicking and typing, researching and refining. The glow from the computer burned his eyes and so, seeking a momentary refreshing period, rose from his table and proceeded to stand up and walk around the library for a few moments. Passing old catalogs of men's lives and searches for riches, freedom, and truth, he plucked an eye catching block of literarture from a shelf and lazily opened the book and flipped the pages when his eyes found this story (paraphrased):

"A man who lived on the northern frontier of China was skilled in interpreting events. One day, for no reason, his horse ran away to the nomads across the border. Everyone tried to console him, but his father said, "What makes you so sure this isn't a blessing?" Some months later his horse returned, bringing a splendid nomad stallion. Everyone congratulated him, but his father said, "What makes you so sure this isn't a disaster?" Their household was richer by a fine horse, which his son loved to ride. One day he fell and broke his hip. Everyone tried to console him, but his father said, "What makes you so sure this isn't a blessing?"

A year later the nomads came in force across the border, and every able-bodied man took his bow and went into battle. The Chinese frontiersmen lost nine of every ten men. Only because the son was lame did the father and son survive to take care of each other. Truly, blessing turns to disaster, and disaster to blessing: the changes have no end, nor can the mystery be fathomed. "

Smiling, I replaced the book on its shelf, and returned back to my seat, but something was amiss. "My laptop!" I exclaimed, all heads turning to me in the surrounding desks.
"Holy F**K, HOLY F**K" I repeated over and over, searching and seizing bags from across the library, accusing and interrogating strangers, studetns and teachers alike until I was forced to calm down. I lost EVERYTHING, information wise. Ebooks, Tools, research, data, EVERYTHING.

So here I remain. Consiquently trapped in my own feelings of SURELY there must be some silver lining to this. But sadly, with no laptop = no work and productivity. I am currently on a friends laptop. Sweet lord. I need to get a new laptop, and from there try and build back up. I have to do SOMETHING.

Well friends, what can I do? Perhaps this CAN be a blessing in this as the story I read states. But, I cant find S**T.

    * On to making this weekly backup that I haven't done for a good 6 months *

As for you, the only thing you can do is get yourself a new computer ASAP and start over, I'm afraid

And to a certain degree I do agree that it can be a good thing. If you're anything like me, you probably had loads of ideas, plans and whatnot saved on your laptop. And if you're anything like me, you know damn well that 90% of this stuff you'll never, ever do. But they're still there to distract you. So in effect you've now gotten rid of all those distractions, and can concentrate on the important plans and ideas - which I'm absolutely sure you don't need a .txt file to remember.

In any case, sorry to hear this and best of luck getting back on track! A similar thing happened to me years back and I know how much it sucks.

Sorry to hear that man, that really sucks. Getting the other drive out now and backing up my system again. You can lose things other than just by theft.

I know that people say don't keep passwords around but I have a book that I keep under lock and key that has them in it because if I ever lost them......

Good luck man, I'll bet you will come back even stronger.

Ugh. Sorry to hear. As mentioned above, back up and back up -- especially automatic systems so you don't have to think about it. Heck, get a free Dropbox account and place your most important / active files there. Great system for backing up and sync'ing via different computers.

About 4 summers ago I worked from within a library. (Two young kids home from school, so it was quiet, and good excuse for a walk.) I was pretty paranoid about my computer, and would even take it to the washroom, or outside if the cell phone rang. Just not worth it to tempt others.

Here's to bouncing back Baker -- you built it once, you can build it again.

    Darn It.
    Damnit.
    Screw It.
    F*$9K It.

Where have I been the past few days?
Where HAVENT I been the past few days?

The long story short, Ive been in the no signal, no internet, no hope, country during my college spring break doing unspeakable tasks for the countrymen to scratch up some change for a laptop upon my return to the real world. I luckily made a whopping sum of $350. Which I promptly bought food for a three weeks and a laptop with which is reasonably nice.

I have never felt so desolate as when I was walking down the street in my city, clothes dirty, and looked into the mirrorlike reflection of a storefront display glass and seen my own pain reflected back at me. It wasnt a physical or emotional pain. It was a mental pain, knowing that I had the potential to make much more and live life much better than I was living it. I wanted to smash through the glass with my bare hand, smashh through it all, the death that occured in family the past week, the hunger, the weakness, the inhibitions, the obstacles and take my birthright. And I will.

I have the laptop, that was the only thing moderately stopping me. Now, I need to buckle down and get serious.

I am going to apply tommorow to demand studios, ehow etc. etc. and try and get at least three accounts for article writing in addition to here, and try and get writing threads on other forums. There was one member here I wrote articles for, and I sent them twice, and Im not sure if because of yahoo being the worst mail client ever or an error on their email I never heard back, will resolve that as well.

I am going to write articles until I can get to $250 and begin dabbling in some blackhat YT temporarily to raise more funds as I have dozens of campaign ideas that would convert.

I need to make this happen asap. Let's GO!

How about shortening your posts up, and removing all your drama and just working. Like what are you doing? I mean....

"I have never felt so desolate as when I was walking down the street in my city, clothes dirty, and looked into the mirrorlike reflection of a storefront display glass and seen my own pain reflected back at me. It wasnt a physical or emotional pain."

Like what are you trying to do, get a writing contract? Just go to work.
