I still use GD for some of my domains. I found them no better or worse than other registrars. Bear in mind that I'm not bidding on domains at GD or selling any domains. I use them simply as a registrar and don't use any of their other services or facilities. For that GD has worked well for me. Their upsells are annoying but at least they now offer a "skip" button. I have found their online services always available when I wanted to make changes. They offer more control and quicker response times with changes I make to my domain settings, they give me plenty of advance notice for renewals and never fail to send me reminder emails if I have forgotten to renew...

I haven't had cause to use their support but I can well believe that it leaves a lot to be desired. But the same can be said of many large companies which rely on volume.
