Why has my WP site just doubled in size?

I'm using WP for the first time on a personal project and yesterday the backups more than doubled in size from 13Mb to 29Mb. I haven't added content that could do that which makes me wonder if it's a sign of a problem, like being hacked or something.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Have you turned wp-cache on or another cache ?
I got out of bed today staring at a ghost. Who forgot to float away, didnt have all that much to say. Wouldn't even tell me his own name.

Incoming comments would add to the size but I don't think to the extent you are experiencing. An update might add to the size, but again I don't think to the extent you are experiencing. Just my two cents worth.

If its not the cache as grynge mentioned , it could be to do with any large files such as images you've uploaded recently (if your backup includes everything).

Alternatively it might be worth looking at your wp_options table which I've noticed gets full of junk in the past.

Have you updated any plugins or themes between those backups? Sometimes (especially if you do it manually) there may be leftover files from the older versions present.

You didn't add a theme and then accidently leave the psd file in the directory?

What is the names of the plugins you are using that could help narrow it down a bit.

Another thing have you checked the error log file maybe something it adding to it continually?

I once stupidly logged all errors to the database of one of my sites what a mistake that was. I have seen some plugins (normally stat type plugins) produce errors for every single hit which quickly bloats an error file.

Thanks for all the suggestions. No new plugins, no new themes, no PSD's unless they've been there since the start. Still gotta figure out the cache issue but been really busy today.

Did you do a cpanel backup? and then do another cpanel backup without deleting the original backup, I have been known to do that on the odd drunken night?

If you leave WP 'open' it can create multi autosaves which can soon clog up the DB
