Bing creates its own version of Google+

Just what the world needs, another social network

And in a style that reeks of a domain trying hard to be cool, it's at so.cl (apparently, it's pronounced "Social". Thanks for figuring it out, Bing, that saves me a lot of hassle)

Coverage at VentureBeat. Some say it's just an old site being relaunched.

(I don't know if I remember it correctly but if you have a company in Chile with a specific name you can require anyone to hand over the .cl domain using that company name. There doesn't seem to be a company called SO in Chile so there may be an opportunity here for someone to acquire the so.cl domain pretty cheaply simply by starting a new company in Chile . If Bing don't hand over the name you could get some fair publicity for your case - "Bing accused of cybersquatting". Either way, you win.)

my brother lives in Chile - time for a bit of planning
I actually wonder whether the lacklustre response to the Facebook IPO is recognition of the fact that the days of the social network are changing?
generally folks are a) more wary of providing personal info b) too busy to take on lots of new networks c) already active if they have that desire - and not interested in new ones...
are new social networks dominated by folks keen on SEO ?

So.cl is an experiment in open search. That means your searches on So.cl are viewable by other So.cl users and will also be available to third parties.
1 big spam fest in the makings lol
I got out of bed today staring at a ghost. Who forgot to float away, didnt have all that much to say. Wouldn't even tell me his own name.

No kidding, Google came up with + because facebook wouldn't play with them but it was a response to FB's success and they tried to create the need rather than meeting one and that's why it didn't work IMO. It was lame. So's this.

That's not to say the right social network couldn't succeeed, just look what FB did to Myspace which at one point was considered to have unassailable market share. Guess again!

Love the chile idea, no one can accuse you of not spotting opportunites...

Micro$oft's track record with security Sucks with a capital "S" and it looks like nothing has changed.

I agree with grynge that the "third parties" comment makes me immediately think spam.

But alas, one of the biggest problems with “social search” is that we don’t always want to see what everyone else is searching for:
I can't agree more. I really don't care what some random person, I don't even know, thinks about some subject I'm not even interested in reading about in the first place.

I doubt if I will be trying this... at least not right now. Who knows what the future holds?

I actually like the concept of social search for collaboration purposes. This is like a mash up of Google and Pinterest.

Requiring social login makes it instantly viral (if people actually use it). I find that typical FB users are very "sheep like" and willingly jump on whatever their friends like. I guess the trust factor helps with that.
