New, Simplified WordPress on its way

I actually feel it's simple enough already, I just hate their constant updates and plugin compatibility issues.

I don't understand how WP is too complex for mobile browsers. WP is the underlying engine, it's the themes that need to be tweaked for mobile.

tke, I think he may be talking about making it realistic to do site development from a smartphone, although that surprises me. Is there really a growing demand for that?

yes - increasingly people are using mobile / tablet as their only computer...

Yes indeed, as evidenced by things like the Google smart phone optimisation checker that Clinton linked a while back. I'm getting more 'mom and pop' type clients asking for mobile compatibility too. I've figured out how to provide it, now to figure out how to stop having clients....

I can understand tablets becoming people's main computing device (unless editing images and videos is one of your major activities), and I have to admit that the latest smartphones are pretty powerful. I guess it makes sense to use a smartphone to develop a smartphone app or website. Now I think a bit more about it, I can see that designing the structure of a 'big' website is an acceptable task on a smartphone - the theme will handle the actual presentation. I am hampered by living in an area with erratic mobile phone coverage, so I don't own one - but I watch my son & daughter-in-law, whose smartphones are part of their professional lives. They're crisp in their conversations, and they don't tweet...

Slightly off-topic, but it's interesting to note that one concern in the Facebook IPO furor is that Facebook's prospects in an increasingly mobile world may be less phenomenal.
