    Domain Longevity Advice

Hi..I am looking to purchase a domain which has initially created in 2001 but on checking on domain tools over the years its seen 33 whois records.

So if I am purchasing this domain for SEO purposes with the age of domain counting as a positive, does the fact that it has had 33 whois records work against it?

Also how do I check if the domain has dropped in time frames in between..Thanks

It may indicate that some smarmy things have happened. It may not too. If you have a subscription to Domain Tools, you can get more useful info. Also check archive.org to see what you can find out about it there. The worse thing is if the porno guys got it at one point and made it into a porn site, or something like that and it could be a burned domain.

As Peter says, there is no definite information to be gained from the fact that there have been 33 WHOIS changes. A change in webmaster address or phone number or name servers would all count as WHOIS changes.

Does the WHOIS say it was registered in 2001?

A domain that's dropped and picked up quickly enough may sometimes still show the original registration date as the first reg. But Google et al may treat it as a new domain. If the archive.org snapshot for this site is significantly different to what's on the site now it's likely it dropped recently and the seller is trying to get rid of it quickly and before the next PR update.

Yes, the WHOIS does state that it was registered in 2001.

And I reviewed the changes on the pages on archive.org as well and I do see that in 2001 it had 11 pages and a view of the pages has the intended content as reflected in the domain. However, since 2008 there are zero pages assigned to it and right now its merely a parked site with links to other related sites..

So would I benefit from the longevity of the site?

Maybe you can. What does the backlink profile look like?

I see that as a red warning light.

Parked pages, unlike "site coming soon" pages that are there by accident when, for example, you're changing hosts, have to be consciously set up. If the owner did that then that's clear indication that the site has shut down or someone else has bought it and left some of the WHOIS details unchanged to give the appearance that ownership hasn't changed.

Would this be true if the domain is being sold on a legitimate site, godaddy in this case..

Is this a domain that has dropped that was registered with Godaddy previously and that they are auctioning off?

    /off topic

Godaddy are the gods of upsells and figuring out how to make extra cash for themselves. Selling domains is a low margin business at best but they must rake it in with their extra services and add ons.

HUM, the fact that it's listed at GoDaddy doesn't mean anything and doesn't change anything. Godaddy is just a marketplace, not a guarantor that the domain was never dropped. You might want to give us the domain name. If it's listed at godaddy then we all have access to it anyway and interested parties would have already seen it i.e. it's not a confidential sale.

And it's a lot easier to comment about a domain when one has actually seen it
