    It looks like it expired and was renewed.

    WHOIS history: 36 records have been archived since 2001-12-11 .

    That's a bit different to a record that shows.
    Regd: 2001-12-11
    Expires: 2011-12-11

    To me, 36 records since 2001 suggests that there could have been breaks in-between. That his content has gone and is replaced with a parked page further adds to the impression that it was dropped and renewed. I wouldn't count on benefiting from the domain age in this case.

    You could ask him if he was the original registrant in 2001 and whether he can provide any proof of that. This question usually elicits a response saying when he actually bought it
