How To Find Your Target Market and Demographic In The Website Selling Business

I'm trying to do market research on the industry of selling websites.

I've used Alexa to try to find a target market and demographics, but
I was wondering if there are other tools or other methods to find more
detailed information. It seems a little scattered in this industry, but
I just wanted to know if anyone else here has done this type of
    research and if so, how...

I really want to do the research now so I won't waste time
building websites people don't want to buy. Any help would
    be great.

    Thanks!

    -Kenny

Are you just talking about finding what the demand is like in a particular area? If so, you could use a keyword research tool like the Google Adwords one to report how many searches are made in Google for a particular phrase. The only problem is that you ned to start with a seed phrase. There are other tools you can use like Google Trends that show you how demand (searches) has varied over time. Not sure whether any of that helps?

Thank you. I actually am familiar with that particular research for each web site I make. I was wondering about getting some demographic information about people who buy web sites. I am writing a business plan and understand that I have two customers--the people on the internet who look at my Web sites and then the people who buy the Web sites from me. I am currently trying to find my target market for the people who want to buy my Web sites and was just looking for any resources to find demographics and psychographics.
    Thanks for your reply!

Not got time to reply fully as I'm cooking tea, but the Ad Planner tool accepts demographic info to define an audience. I'm not sure whether you can get demographics back though.

I really want to do the research now so I won't waste time building websites people don't want to buy.
Then you can monitor the tags at Flippa and see what's the hottest seller.

But I think you need to look at it from a different angle. The one thing buyers want more than anything else is profit so you can demonstrate profits you're on to a winner no matter what the subject matter of the site. There are essentially two types of buyers - the ones looking to buy a website business and the ones who've been convinced they can create a business if they buy a template. You snag the former by showing profits, you snag the latter with hype, promises and improving your sales copy.

    Thanks Clinton,

Monitoring tags seems like a good idea.

What I'm looking for specifically is what demographic our target market is. What age, sex, location. I know it's pretty broad in this industry, but I'm looking for a place I can research and find out who our customers really are.
